What kind of groups can a socom 16 get at long ranges? I'm talking 300 yards out to 1000 yards. I'm very new to the M1A world and I keep hearing conflicting opinions about them. What I like about them is how versatile they are said to be but are they really that great at long range? Of course I don't expect true sniper rifle accuracy but I'm just curious. Thanks |

Anything over 100 yrds is more difficult with the SOCOM, due to the fat front sight post and huge rear sight hole. I have hit 6" plates at 200 yrds open sights with one but it did take a couple rounds to do so. The rifle itself is accurate enough, just the sights are lacking for distance. A good scout scope or even a red dot might make things much easier. It also depends on the ammo of course. For versatility the SOCOM is great. I could defiantly hit minute of man at 200+ yrds with it, and for multiple close range targets it is lighter and easier to maneuver with than the other M1As. It also has a good compensator that allows follow up shots rather easily. |

Thanks Jonas. Sorry I didn't mention it before but I did of course mean with a scope. What I really want to know is whether or not the rifle is able to hit man sized targets out to 1000 yards, assuming of course that the shooter, ammo, weather etc. allow it. If not to 1000 yards than how far? Heck, I'd be interested just to hear different people's general opinion of the rifle. Thanks for the help. |

Well, I've only fired South African surplus which is not the most accurate. I've never benched it, only standing, kneeling, and prone. I'm sure with the right ammo (168-175 Match) and a bipod and scope it could be done. I remember before the SOCOM the some company made a 16inch M1A as a military sniper platform. The difference in the SOCOM will not so much be loss of accuracy, but some loss of velocity. Now for hitting men, .308 can do the trick out to 1000. Will the SOCOM be the best out to 1000?, I'd say no, get a standard length 22" barrel, but for close to medium range it does it trick, and does it well. |
Springfield Armory, INC made a 16 inch M1A sniper rifle that the military used? |
It was Troy Industries Rock SOPMOD M14 that had a 16" Mike Rock 5r barrel. With optics it was accurate out to 800m (I think). There was a reveiw on 10-8 forums some time ago. They are not made anymore. I don't know of any actual range reports of SOCOMs on full distance ranges at 600+m with optics. |

I think it really depends on what you what the rifle to do 90% of the time. Is this going to be a bench rifle, an action competition rifle, a SHTF rifle, ect. If you want to scope it, bench it, and shoot at 1000, I'd say go for a 22" barrel. If you want a great competition carbine or SHTF rifle, I think the SOCOM is perfect. It all depends on the mission.

So, Springfield Armory, INC did not make a military sniper rifle as stated in a previous post, right? |
