ok, i see and hear so much talk of Garands being checked for headspacing, wear and whatnot...

can anyone tell me more about this? do they wear down from shooting, or corrosion?

do M1A's and M14s have the same issue ?

thanks

On Garands, HS doesn't "wear down" Most HS problems are caused by backyard gunsmiths just sticking a Bbl and not doing it properly,,, OR by swapping bolts out from different rifles,,, OR, a slim possibility of the receiver stretching from too hot of loads. On Garands, the barrell wears out before the HS changes.
On M-14's same thing as above
On M1A's,, same thing, except the receiver has been known to stretch, especially with hot loads, because it's cast,, not as tough/strong a way to make a receiver.

Some commerical m14 type rifles don't have good engagement between the bolt lugs and the receiver locking lugs, so they'll set back over time.  Still, it's probably going to be at a fairly benign rate.

I have been shooting my M1A since 1977 (or 78).  Mostly in compitition. Several thousand for rounds. (I shot with the AK NG rifle team from 78-92). I never had a headspace change.  I have changed the barrels (I'm on my 4th) heavy Barrnet Match barrel.  I have an erosion gage I use to check the barrel to determine the throat erosion, changing barrels when the gage shows enough wear to screw with accuracy.

Have your head space checked, it its good, dont worry about it.  The throat is gonna go first.

I've shot mine since '78,, had 6 Bbls on,,, but, when you replace a Bbl,, you have no idea if the HS has changed because you HS the new Bbl to the receiver/bolt.
Mine has changed (taken measurments before anf after Bbl replacements), but it's more from the locking lugs/receiver wearing in on the first 2 Bbls, and if you chamber your Bbl accordingly,, it's no problem.
Mine hasn't stretched,, but then it's one of the older ones,, and I don't shoot hot loads. Some of the newer ones will a little.

LOL I didnt mean to say that head space wont change, When you get a new target barrel its just had a reamer started, you have to finish reaming it AFTER THE BARREL IS INSTALLED.  I have a "pull reamer" that I finish reaming to the correst head space.
