What caused the nicks in the muzzles of the Greek returns?  I went through the rack at CMP north and nearly all the Greeks had nicks.

It almost looks like they used them to hammer in tent stakes or something similar.

From what I understan it's how the Greeks traeted their weapons. That's why everyone went nuts over the Danes, those barrels (VAR) were awesome...wish I would have gotten one myself.

Now that being said, having the muzzel crowned on a Garand isn't hard and most all of the Garand smiths can do this.

The Greeks were careless about cleaning.  Anything with muzzle damage is rated as "Rack Grade" from the CMP and can lead to a great buy.  I got two beautiful specimens with damaged crowns.  A quick spin with a crowning tool set them in perfect order...

So the nicks are the result of improper cleaning?  How the heck did they do it?  Did they put the rod in the barrel and slam it into the ground?  I truly do not get it.  I may need to have mine recrowned.  It gauges TE 4 ME 2 with a replacement stock and front hand guard.  It was sold as a field grade but as I understand the grading system it gauges as a service grade is this correct?

Who knows why soldiers do what they do to their weapons. If yours is nicked, then Brownells has a crowning tool that from what I understand is pretty simple to use. That should take care of it.

There is some general abuse going on.  But the USGI steel segmented cleaning rod is a sure-fire recipe for quick muzzle erosion.  It gives you three opportunities with every pass to damage it.
