I know "how" to order from them... but how do you receive the shipment when you don't know when it's coming, but you have to be home to sign for the package?

How do you guys get around it... I don't want to have it shipped to work.

If no one is home, they will leave a post it type note on your door and you can go to the depot to get it or they will bring it back the next day or the next or the next, after that it is shipped back.

As long as any *adult* is there to sign for it, they will leave it.

RR pretty much covered it.  they sent me an email when it shipped and it contained a tracking number.  this actually helped me avert disaster as they had shipped it to the wrong address, but i digress.  you SHOULD get an email from them upon shipment (assuming of course you gave them an email addy)  you can track it from there.  you could try to call fedex to try to coordinate the delivery as well, especially if you live in a large development.  the fedex truck makes 2 trips to my complex, so if i wish i can tell them to put it on the early or late truck as needed.

Wait for notification from CMP. Check the Fed Ex tracking service. Call in to work sick. Stay home and play with your new toy . . .

I like that suggestion even better Bladeswitcher.

What concerned me was the:
"*AMMO CANNOT BE HELD AT FEDEX LOCATION (PER REGULATIONS) OR
LEFT AT FRONT DOOR - AMMO MUST BE SIGNED FOR*"
posting for ammo, they make it sound like FedEx will send it back to the CMP if you're not there on that day and they won't try to deliver it again.

Ammo is delivered via "Fedex Home Delivery". This is a contracted delivery service. Once the delivery driver has the package on his truck, the way I understand it is it does not return to the depot. It stays on the truck until it can be delivered. I left a note for the driver, and had my elderly neighbor sign for mine.

My local Fedex Home Delivery contractor left his phone number on the sticky note he stuck on the door. I called him and he agreed to leave a case of CMP ammo on my front porch as long as I signed the little slip. I'm not sure this matters but my house is 20 steps above the street and I have one of those old fashioned brick porches with knee high walls. Also, I live in a relatively small town. I bet big city drivers wouldn't do that.

For a rifle, I just let them attempt delivery once, then call from work and ask them to hold it at the depot.  Then I pick it up that night.  I do the same for all my C&R rifles.  I can't take a day off every time I order something, I don't have enough days!

For ammo, unfortunately the service the CMP uses sucks, and you can't pick it up until the last day.  Even though the jerk offs who answer the phone for FedEx will tell you its being held, its bullshit.  I found that out after three tries to hold for pick up.
