I'm planning to replace my stock SAI extractor for a USGI one, but have no clue how to do it.  i presume it's not as easy as an AR, but i could use some help on getting it done.  i'd rather not fuck anything up.  i dont have the bolt tool, so it could be interesting.

Get a Garand buttstock cleaning kit. The handle is a good multitool that I have used many times to change extractors and firing pins on my Garands. Watch out for the spring launching into orbit when you remove the extractor.

Try here for Garand bolt disassembly:

If you want a free .pdf file of a US Army M14 Technical Manual (shows complete disassembly, operation, etc.) send me an e-mail at [email protected]  I'll send you TM 9-1005-223-34 August 1972 (2.54 MB file size).  Bill Ricca says this is the one that is a must-have for any M14/M1A fan.  Yes, it's free.  E-mail me.

Why are you changing out your extractor?

the extractor that came with the rifle does not provide reliable enough extraction.  every other mag or so i get a round that fails to extract.

SAI extractors are crap.  Should be the first thing you lose.  I would also recommend a new USGI ejector and ejector spring, particularly if you are using an ARMS 18 scope mount.

THere is a way to do it with the M1 Garand M10 tool and one section of cleaning rod that does not require disassembling the rifle.  Then, you put pressure on the ejector to replace the extractor with a spent 30-06 casing.

well the good news is the step by step from M14 forums worked out great, but the extractor may or may not have been genuine USGI....  It took a major dump on the 1st round, and basically was junk by the 5th round.

On the left is the stock SAI extractor, and on the right is the failed "USGI" extractor

Napoleon, I had a few problems with my Springfield's ejection too at first. Since we both have the loaded model I figure we might be sharing the same problem.

I used to get 1 every 2-3 mags, then as I kept shooting it, it kept doing it less and less. One thing I immediately noticed, is that the extractor doesn't grip the round in the chamber unless it's closed with full force. If you try to slowly follow through the operating rod by pulling it forward, you probably already know that it won't eject it.

The problem I had was that I kept my gas cyllinder plug in too tight. A part of the piston (about 3-4mm) came out from its port and kept the operating rod from fully seating against the cyllinder. Once I loosened it from tight, and did 2 counter-clockwise turns it hasn't done it to me about 700 rounds later.

You probably know all this shit as well as everyone who owns an M1A, but it helped me.

guys-

i have been in contact with the gentleman (Claude) who sent me this extractor along with 2 of 11 mags which did not meet USGI spec.  This guy is a true class act.  I offered to eat the extractor seeing how it was sold as-is, but instead he assured he would send TWO new extractors along with my exchanged mags.  This gentleman is a true class act, and i would STRONGLY suggest you do business with Claude.

he has parts for the M14, as well as the M1, and M1 carbine, as well as misc parts for several other weapons.  Though some products have not been great, he bends over backwards ON A HOLIDAY WEEKEND to make it right.
