A few years ago Springfield Armory Inc. sold a M1A Scout . it had an 18" barrel and conventional stock, no gee-whiz rails.    Do any of you battle rifle  guys know where a guy could get  a good rifle like this today?    Would  I have to have a custom rifle built, and by who?     Or  could I find a SA Scout used in nice shape?

I have a nice custom built full-size rifle based on a M1A receiver (McMillan stock, krieger brl, mostly USGI) built for High Power type shooting, but am looking for something lighter and more compact, still iron sighted.  Got an AR10, but it just dont feel right.

This one seems kinda high , but your local gunshop should be able to get you one.

I got a Bush model from 1985 with walnut NM bedded stock, flash hider, no forward optic mount for under $1400 shipped.  Look at gunbroker and gunsamerica, they pop up from time to time.  Look for a scout or bush model, not one of the socoms.  Good luck!

Thanks for the tips guys.  I'm thinking the 18" barreled M1A would be a nice shooter.

The one you provided the link to is stated as NIB, can't get much better, but priced accordingly, if only we knew the component quality....

Also concidering a custom rifle from GA Precision, a bolt-action with the new Badger Ordinance 20 round mag floorplate made up with a 20" mid-weight 308 barrel.  Top notch accuracy, but quite pricey and I'm really looking for something iron sighted (love those M14 sights!).

Check out the gunsamerica and gun broker, they pop up from time to time for good prices.  Plus, you will get almost all USGI parts on the older guns, which haven't been shot much.  I found one locally, sold in 1974 as a receiver that was made into NM config, barrel, bedding, sights, sight protector, spare parts, spare bolt, scope mount, 4 USGI mags, etc, for like $1590 out the door!   There are deals out there if you keep looking!  My 18" is a very sweet shooter, very accurate, too.

last year or so I picked one up on Gunbroker for 900.00
Springfield Armory Scout with a black stock.. pretty plain jane but exactly what I wanted. And of course the price was right.. it was used but very lightly and shoots well.
