My M1 Garand leaves a dimple on the round as it chambers it. I have fired about 50 rounds so far and it has not slam fired.  Is this normal or do i need to do something about it ?

Completely normal. The M1 has free flaoting firing pin. There is no firing pin spring to hold the FP to the rear until gun is in battery. Charles.

This is why milsurp ammo with hard mil primers is recommended IIRC.
