At the ending of the movie Jaws, how many shots were fired by the M1 at the shark?

Thanks,

Thanks for the Reply DVR9,

In whatching myth busters on the discovery channel - it was shark week.

They were looking at all of the effects and proveing them or not.

One was shooting the scuba tank, and they showed (reminded me) that it was shot w/ a M1 Garand.

The out come is that the scuba tank would take off like a ballon that you let go befor you tied the knot (rocked propulsion).  It did not/would not blow up.

They actually found a collector who had the original tanks from the movie, and they used the same type.

I once talked to a Navy vet who was a Salvage Diver.
He said the Navy tested SCUBA tanks, both steel and aluminum to determine what would happen if they were struck by gunfire.

He said he had a good laugh at the movie, since the Navy test proved that a bullet could not cause a tank to blow.

As a side, note, anybody notice the M1 used in the movie was heavily coated with rust.....including the STAINLESS steel gas cylinder.

There's a story that when they were doing the movie, Roy Schieder used his personally owned DCM M1 rifle in the movie.

"We're gonna need a bigger magazine...............We're gonna need a bigger magazine, right?"

And hence the birth of the M1A/M14.

You do know that stainless steel rusts quite easily, right? Especially if it's in a saltwater environment, which the M1 in Jaws was.

True stainless steel does not rust easily. The so-called stainless steel used in firearms does not has as high a chromium percentage as true stainless steel. Seems it harder to machine true stainless steel.

Stainless does rust, but not quite like the M1 in the movie.

Special effects obviously dressed the rifle up with some fake rust to look more like a fisherman's shark rifle, and didn't know about the stainless gas cylinder.
