Originally I was thinking about getting a Greek Service, but the regular Service is only $50 more.  Any reason I should go with the regular Service over the Greek?  The $50 doesn't scare me, but if there's really no reason to spend the extra money I'd rather put it towards more 30-06 ball.

Thanks for any replies.

I have read a lot of mixed stories about the Greeks.  Some seem to get great looking rackers, but I'm inclined to believe they are the exception rather than the rule.  The wood on most of the Greeks seem to be what's ugly, but I have read the same of some USGI rifles as well.  For the most part I think the distinction between the rack and service Greeks will be the condition of the barrel, where the service grade will have a better shot at not needing to be replaced.  I envy the guys who can go to pick their own, rather than the crapshoot most everyone else has.  Most of the guys go for the Greek rack graded rifles with the expectation of needing a new stock set and barrel........anything less is a bonus.  There has been talk on the CSP board (jouster.com) about how the supply of CMP Garands is drying up.  One could argue that the parts for the Garand will go up if and when that happens.  $295 is a great price if all you need is a stock or barrel, but some of the other parts can be spendy if you get a rifle that is really ratty.

I went with a USGI service grade Springfield Garand and am happy, though the original stock did not match the handguards and had a nasty crack in it.  They replaced the stock, but it is still much darker than the handguards and the trigger assembly closes on it with almost no tension.  Still, the metal and bore are nice and it would be a looker if I broke down and got a nice set of wood.
