In anticipation of the new Springfield Armory scopes, I'm getting ready to purchase a scope mount for my M1A. I'm looking at the SmithEnterprises and the Arms #18 mount.

I know M1A mounts in the past have had issues. Do you thing either one of these  is a good bet? What are your thoughts?

Thanks

Smiths are the shit if you can afford them. I'm personally going with ARMS18 .

What is better about the Smith?

I posted pretty much the same topic a while ago and the overwhelming reponse was the Smiths mount.  Both the ARMS18 and the Smiths mounts are battle proven in Iraq and Afganistan. I'm not really sure what advantage the Smiths mount has over the ARMS18 but the ARMS is about $75 cheaper.

My ARMS #18 had a pretty bad finish unlike any ARMS product I have received in the past (Their Email support was none). The setup I used was Warne Maximum Medium rings with a Bushnell 3200 Elite 40mm objective fixed mil dot scope. The clearance problem is mainly with the rear sight and scope body.

Problems with an M14 with a scope is pretty much that the cheek weld becomes impossible unless you get some sort of riser.

Read the free online M14 Scope Mount FAQ at www.imageseek.com/m1a  It explains in detail why the Smith Enterprise scope mount is so excellent.

Rooster from Battlerifles.com has adjustable cheek pieces that you can bolt into a synthetic stock and he only charges $40 or so.  They're well worth the money and he ships out quickly too!

Can those be adjusted low enough to allow use of iron sights with the scope detached?

It depends on where you drill the holes.
