Can someone please remind me the correct torque for the gas plug on a M1a? I want to say 90 inch/pounds.

torque?

i just tighten mine hand tight. i never though about a spec. kind of anal because it's meant to be serviced in the field and GIs didn't have torque wrenches.

Tighten to 15 foot pounds per National Match standards.

The "NM Standard" torque has been bumped to 21 foot pounds according to a reliable, but secondary source. This requires a torque wrench (obviously!) and a gas cylinder wrench (less obvious). However for a general purpose M14 rifle just tighten a couple of "grunts" with the M14 combination tool and you'll be fine.

Just out of curiosity, when did they bump it to 21lbs and what was the reason for the hell of it?

I only got the torque and no explaination that I recall, but I don't use a torque wrench on this rifle. I use the 2-grunt method and as long as it stays in the rifle I'm good to go.
