I have a nice DCM M1 that I got many moons ago, had it restocked, refinished, and added NM sights by a good 'smith. It shoots good, but now I NEED another one (Potato Chip Theory). I would like to latch on to one of these Greek returns at the North Store / Camp Perry in July. With proper documentation (ID, club affiliation, CCW permit) can I just go there, pick one out and bring it home? What about being from out of state? I live in Arizona and will be visiting the area next month. Any help on this will be appreciated! |

You just described the process. Bring all the documentation with you. Store is within sight of the entrance to Camp Perry. Perry has a guarded gate the past three years, so expect to see MPs. If you're coming up for the National Matches expect it to be crowded. -- Chuck |
Being from out of state doesn't matter. The CMP is exempt from the Gun Control Act and is not subject to BATF regulations. They do, however, run you through NICS. |
| I appreciate the help guys. I hope they have a few good M1's at the North Store when I get there July 6.7, or 8th (not sure which day yet). While a Greek rack grade at $295 seems like a bargain, a clean looking SA service grade at $500 migh catch my eye, or perhaps something in between. If they are all beaters then I can save some money and just have had a nice ride to Camp Perry. |

Hi! Thought I would chime in this morning about the Greeks. I had one of the HRA service grade Greeks about a week after they were released. Nice gun substantially all original parts including barell. The stock was some what awful. On Friday I received two Greek rack grade SA. These also were completely original down to the barell. (stock sets were very mismatched). I have no complaints what so ever with the $295 rack grades. As a matter o fact I'll be purchasing two more HRA Greek rack grade next month. Oh yea, all 3 of these Greeks will need new butt plates NONE of them were salvageable. Travis |

Joking aside, why are the buttplates bad (unsalvageable), were they stored standing in a bit of water or just all scratched up? Also if I get a decent Greek M1 and the stock is on the ugly side I could restock it at a later date. Any idea of the price for a new walnut stock set? Trying to figure out if It would be more cost effective to get a Service grade Springfield if they have better wood. |
I don't know what kind of drills those Greeks ran, but all three of my Greek buttplates looked like they've been dragged across miles of concrete. On one example, I have no idea what the armorer was drinking, but he evidentally drilled out the top screw hole and hammered another long machine screw (the one that goes into the bottom of the buttstock and secures to the sling swivel) into the top hole. It took a good bit of cursing and playing with a Dremel and vice grips to get it out. Cheapest new wood would probably be a Boyd's set although it is a bit fatter than GI contour. Most people don't care but some purists do. I think they run something like $78 or so for a finished set direct from them. |

Acutally, I'm steering all my shooting buddies right now into buying rack grade or service grade Greeks. I've received (1) danish Winchester and (1) sg SA, (2) rack greek SA and (1) Sg greek HRA. Maybe I'm lucky, but the greeks I've received put the other guns to shame! Get yourself 2 rack greeks and just swapp furniture between the two to come up witha a complete set. I'll post some pictures tonight. I'm still in the refinishing mode on all of them. Just taking my time. Travis |

Travis speaketh the truth! I just got back home from my vacation. Went to Camp Perry and the CMP North Store. Found a real decent Greek return M1 Garand Rack Grade. Throat Erosion is 3, barrel erosion 2.2. Stock is dark and ugly, but the rest of it is a good rifle and now it has a good home. It is a HR Arms and the receiver serial number indicates it is from 1955, the barrel says HRA 3-55. The dude at CMP believes it is the original barrel. Rear sight tracks true and stays put, everything seems reasonably tight. Lots of wear on the sides of the barrel, and the butplate has seen some heavy use but has no sharp edges and opens/closes fine. The action opens and closes smooth with no snags or hang-ups. Next task is to pull it out of the stock and clean the action and barrel real good, then lube it up and put it back in the sotck and shoot it bunch. Then I will clean up that ugly stock, see what is under the dark stain. Down the road I may restock it and maybe get it parkerized. Or just keep it as the fully functional well experienced battle rifle that it is. The people at the CMP North Store were great! Helped me out and were efficient. I would suggest that anyone thinking about getting a M1 jump through the few hoops required and get an M1 now while they have so many available at this reasonable price. My M1 Greek lend/lease return Rack Grade was $295. Greek Service Grades were $450. Regular M1's are $400 and $500 for Rack and Service Grades respectively. They had racks full of Collector Grade M1's for $1200 to $1400 if you want all matching original issue parts. It was a very pleasant experience to be in a room full of US Battle rifles and able to handle/inspect them all. Thanks to all of you guys who helped me get all my documentation in order to make this possible. |
