After reading several comments about the defective paint on the M1A synthetic stocks, I contacted Springfield to get their policy on how this problem would be resolved.  Here is the email sent, then their reply.

I would like to acknowledge and thank Springfield Inc. for their courteous and professional attitude during the numerous phone calls I've made to Customer Service for various issues.

I am writing to obtain the current Springfield Inc. policy on the repair or replacement of a black synthetic stock.  Based on my own experience and that of others posted on several web sites, there seems to be a manufacturing process defect in the production and painting of the black synthetic stock.  While there is no functional loss in the product (rifle), the product is still defective.

If the policy is to replace with like stock, does this only continue the problem.  Is Springfield actually addressing the production issue with the manufacturing/process engineers and production staff.  Will Springfield offer replacement with either a walnut, birch, or mossy oak synthetic (provided same problem is not occurring).

Example of not addressing such issues:

If each time you opened your car door, paint came off around the handle or when you opened the trunk, paint fell off the edge of the seal, you would be quite upset and expect the manufacture to properly repair the defect with no cost to you.  If this happened to several hundred customers, it would probably lead to a class action suit which is poor publicity and costly to the manufacturer.

Would it not make since to stop shipping any black synthetic stocks until the black paint process is corrected?  And for those defected
stocks already sold, would it not make since to offer a no cost replacement for any of the stocks listed above?

I look forward to receiving Springfield's response, and working with you to resolve this on going problem.

After two weeks of no reply, I called Springfield's Customer Service and was told the following:
"Go to a Harley Davidson Shop, and buy their black wrinkle or krinkle paint...I forget which one they call it.  You will just have to touch-up the stock whenever the paint in those areas comes off."
Is this occuring with the camo stock as well?
"Yes."
Can I swap my stock for a walnut stock?
"Yes, but there is a $60 charge for this."

I had the same problem, sprayed the stock with Brownells Aluma-Hyde II, matte black. Looks good with the matte finish. (Sprayed right over the factory finish)

Bravo Sierra!  What a bunch of crap.

I've heard that SA Inc.'s M1As are going down the crapper, little-no usgi parts, cast parts, etc.

I sure wish there was some competition in the M1A buisness.  Maybe some company that puts out a good product and has great customer service like DSA...

What do you expect from a company that takes surplus U.S.G.I synthetic stocks($15.00-$20.00 ea. most places), does a lousey job painting them then charges $175.00+ for the them?

MP906 and Sukebe, I have to agree with both of you guy's, for the price of those rifle's I expect better quality and customer support. I'll bet Springfield's attitude would change with some competition.

COME ON DSA, GET INTO THE M1A BUSINESS!

The guys that are buying new S.A. Inc. M1A's are still getting a good rifle. Not as good as some of the M1A's produced in the past. Unfortunately, they are not getting $1,200.00 dollars worth of rifle. They are paying around $1,200.00 but it's not a good value. For that kind of money you can have a much better rifle built using all U.S.G.I. parts. Might I suggest starting with a Poly Tech? I know, I know, no "Life time warranty". Buy an S.A. Inc. and be glad you have a "Life time warranty". You're going to need it. Of course, no body can predict how long S.A. Inc. will be in business.

Well, I saw a new standard SA Inc. M1A w/ a gorgeous GI stock and TRW OP rod for $1045 at a gunshow this weekend.

It always amazes me how light those things are.

Wish I had that kind of $$$ right now...

Why is it that if I bash Springfield I am the bad guy??????
You guys are one hundred percent correct in your judgement of Springfield....but on the Handguns section of ARFCOM...Springfield is worshipped like they are gods.  You should see the sh*t I catch for telling it like it is about that filthy, dirty scumbag company.

I have to agree with you about Springfield handguns.....I've had 3 and they sucked...made multiple trips back for repair and never did get fixed...and I'm not a picky shooter...
on the other hand I've had 3 SA M1A rifles...and they have been terrific...
