has anyone here purchased a rifle from the CMP? any opinions about them? I was maybe thinking of getting an M1 from them.

Get one, or more than one if you can afford it.  You won't regret it.  I've known a LOT of shooters here and elsewhere who have ordered M1 from the CMP.  I don't know ONE that regrets it.

They sent me a really good Nov. 1942 Service Grade Springfield.  It's consistantly holds around 2 MOA when I do my part.  Pretty good for a 60 year old rifle.

And remember, when you hold a Garand, you're holding a piece of history.  Was this rifle carried by an American soldier at Normandy? Iwo Jima? Panmoumjon? (sp)  Maybe, maybe not, but you never know.  You can't say that about an off the shelf AR.

I've bought 2 in the last 6 months, both Service Grade Springfield Armory, both are worth every dime I spent on them, first rifle I bought has a decent bore, shoots 3moa@ 100yds, second rifle has much better bore, looks like new, it shoots about 2 1/2 moa@ 100yds (due to the weather,I've only had it out 3 times,I suspect it will only get better)both rifles were made in 1945, both have the orginial barrels on them,Both function flawlessly,Both have been partily rebuilt, as the bolt and other small parts don't have the correct revision number on these parts,No big deal,I'm not looking to restore either one,CMP is the best deal going, Get one, you won't be sorry, ditto what Fishkepr said above they are history

3 1/2 yrs ago when I went on disability.. I wanted a CMP Garand.... now I have 7 and 2 more are on the way  :-)   I got involved in the Garand matches and it's a total blast (pun intended) to see the firing line full of Garands blasting away.. they are a unique rifle and LOT of fun!!!!!  you will certainly get attention at ANY range when you show up with one.... and for a piece of history at those prices... you can't go wrong...

Definately get a M1. And yes use CMP. You just can't go wrong with either one.

I've got six and they are fun to shoot at steel targets from 200 to 600 yards.  If you can aim at it, you may be able to hit it (especially with reloads). Great fun even on a windy day when the 55 gr fmj blows all over heck.
Match shooting is fun too.  Try to put all ten in the black during rapid fire stages.
