Picked it up Friday   I always wanted one...

Any Advice, sugestions, pointers?

I will probably mostly plink with it, as I have been shooting my Bushmaster in the hipower matches, but I try this for one match just for the heck of it.

For Plinking I will probably just break it in with Fed/AE 308.  But I will probably load up the Win 147g fmj bullets with 748 or something like that, (alot of options but I hope I can stay with power that will meter well.  And have the over all cost realitively inexpensive.

I also ordered a trigger group from CMP ( our club is affiliated) which I will have the trigger pull set and crisp as possible (and I wont have to mess with the origional one that came with the rifle)

Here it is. (so/so pic anyway)

Clean/grease her up, work the charging handle manually a few hundred times (it's a beutiful sound) to smooth the action a bit, give us a range report!  Congrats

You can smooth the gun out 100 times quicker by just taking her out and shooting about fifty rounds through it. Disassemble, clean and lightly lube all surfaces except for the gas piston components, just clean that and dry it.

Use any one of the good commercial firearms greases out there. Lube up the bolt roller, the camming surface for said roller, and the op rod notch in the receiver with a good bit of grease.  Put a bit on the recoil spring and guide also.

Make sure you keep the gas plug tight ( a high quality 3/8 inch boxend wrench will do the trick until you can order an M14 combo tool... just tighten a wee bit...use the FLATS of the wrench do NOT use the 12 point box end.

Things to order:  M-14 cleaning kit available from brownells un the Masen trade name...those are G.I. kits...I cannot vouch for Masen's quality but brownells rarely sells junk. (and wouldn't do so on purpose)  this will contain the combo tool you will need, plus other M14 essentials.

a pair of castle nut pliers from brownell's....very important to have and not need  ( not the other way around ) on some Springfields the flashider "settles" in after about a thousand rounds and ends up loose.  Castle nut pliers are the only real way to fix that problem properly.

a set of hex wrenches for the couple of set screws on the gun ( the castle nut lock screw and the front sight screw....I do not remember what sizes they are.

possibly a handguard removal pliers set also...not terrible essential....until you need it.

these should have you fully prepared to care for your 14 from here to around doomsday.

enjoy that M1A  !!!!!!!

Nice rifle.  Is that the MA9103 with the Birch Stock?  Did it come with the loaded coupon?  Do they still offer the Government Scope and Mount with rings for $125?  Who manufactured the barrel?  I am interested because I am looking at the MA9103 myself.

Thank You,
G. Jason Payne

For plinking get a case of Portugese M963 Ball and let the brass pickers gather the cases.

15c/shot at most.

By all means, order at least a couple 20 round GI mags from Cole distributing, while you still can.  Though I like the 10 rounders at the range, for historical and photo purposes it's cool to have a couple real 20 round mags the gun was designed for.

www.coledistributing.com/MM054.ASP?i=&pageno=31&cat=Magazines

I use the Portugese surplus stuff in the 200 round green packs, and never had any problems.

Thanks to EVERYONE for all the info Hopefully I will get out for a little bit this weekend to try it out

JPayne6128; It did come with the coupon however it expired 31Dec02.  Yep. it is the MA1903, Birch stock with the selector cutout. I am not sure about the barrel, I havent taken the rifle down yet, however I will let you know as soon as I find out.

ED_P; I will definately be picking up a couple of those mags.  Should I get the ones for $36 or the ones for $45?  Any difference other than the wrapper?

The Portugese ammo, is that the stuff Ammoman has with the FNM 80-70 headstamp?

Bob243,

I know two guys at my range who've brought the like new ones for $36.95.  They have some minor handling marks and a scratch or two from being stored stacked next to other mags, but function fine and haven't seen any real use.

The $44.95 ones I've never seen, but are probably fine. Buying bagged magazines that old is a bit of a gamble, depending how they've been stored.  I have only brought NIB M1-A mags once before, but first opened one that I promised to buy, checking it for rust, then
brought a couple more from the same box.

When you get them, take them apart and give them a quick wipe down inside and out with whatever cleaner/lube you have on hand. I found some have had a light hazey oxidation that comes off easily with a quick cleaning. Almost all M14 mags are old, so expect a light layer of either oxidation or dried goop to clean out before use.

I bought mine back in late April 2002, and ended up having to send it back because the stock just did not fit right.   The $125 scope/mount/rings deal had started for rifles purchased after July 1, 2002, so I talked them into letting me in on that.  They told me to include a check and copy of the purchase receipt with the rifle I sent back and they would honor it.   It took a few months to get the scope, but I got it!!  I was pretty happy with that.

Hey Bob243,

Congrats on your new rifle!  After two years of waiting, I finally bought my Springfield standard rifle w/ heavy walnut stock last August.  It's the same rifle as yours, with G.I. barrel.  Only difference is I paid extra for a new, walnut stock and it has the muzzle break instead of the flash suppressor.

It came with an HRT (Herrington & Richardson/Textile) bolt, but I wanted a TRW. Barrel is a Winchester, and I used the coupon to order a spare barrel, which is also a Win.

Get the M-14 books by Joe Poyer and the big, green collector book by R. Blake Stevens.  There's lots of info on part I.D. numbers, military contractors and history of the manufacturing of the M-14 rifle.  There, you can look up all the contract codes to find out what kind of parts are in your rifle (Springfield, H&R, Win/Olin, TRW).

I used the coupon for both the scope package and the accesories.  I got the 6x40 Gov. scope with the Springfield mount and rings for $130, shipped.  I took it out just once so far, and I am pleased with it.  Still have more shooting to do until I'm sure.

I used the other coupon to buy the leather NM sling, gas cyliner wrench (works great in conjunction w/ G.I. tool when tightening/loosening gas plug), and a spare G.I. chrome-lined barrel (Winchester stamped).

Let us know how well your rifle shoots and how/if you reload for it!

:)
