What are the most common (lightened) weights for the ACR bolt carrier?
Secondly, I saw a post on the other forum about a company that professionally lightens and coats them. Anyone have experience they can lend? |
Mod 1 Firearms does the lightened carrier you probably saw in the other forum. It costs 125 uncoated and takes about 2 weeks, which is a hell of a deal. The final version he does now comes in at around 10oz. Untuned, the recoil reduction and firing speed and follow up shots time is pretty noticeable. With slightly tuned gas it's basically an airsoft gun. I run it in both my ACRs.
Here’s the contact info for Mod 1 400 Etter Dr Unit 4 Nicholasville, KY, 40356 859-948-MOD1 (6631) [email protected] [email protected] MOD 1 https://www.facebook.com/mod1firearms/?fref=ts Your best bet is to email Pike and ask for the ACR lightened carrier. He also does TiN coating (which he’s doing to my next carrier) and Cerakote as well as amazing work to pistols and rifles. Just as an example here’s my M&P Pro that he gave the full treatment to.

Also here's a quick 6 round test.

His was originally done by Marvin but UPS lost it in shipping so he had a spare one machined up by Pike. LOL yep. I was sending it to BigDog have the rest of the cuts done and he got an empty envelope. And lost should have had quotes. I know fucker at the ups store stole it. |

It looks like yours was first lightened by Marvin and later, by Mod 1. Is the 10oz weight a combination of both? I don't understand the logic of the upright projection near the front, seems to serve no purpose. I was originally going to have mine cut like this, but it's needlessly difficult to align each of the milling operations with each other, starting with the forward assist cut. http://hkbeltfed.com/imgs/acrcarrier.jpg Anyway, I scrapped it and decided to make the cuts lengthwise in the carrier, similar to how the carrier is machined in the first place. http://hkbeltfed.com/imgs/acrcarrier2.jpg Here's the first op done. I'm having the other carrier done the same, as well as a lengthwise lightening cut along the right side to both. These cuts are also quicker so any machine shop can probably do several carriers for an hour of shop time, maybe $75. Will post finished pics later. http://hkbeltfed.com/imgs/acrlightcarrier.jpg Quoted:

Pike wasn't comfortable removing that front step and didn't think it would lose much more than a fraction of an ounce. Also the Mod 1 is cut length wise along both sides of the top and the top portion that's left has been shortened. Plus the obvious side cuts. These pictures are for comparison to stock but the newest version has the bevels along the edges and is a bit lower.

He just said he thinks it may be used as some sort of backup stop for the charging handle. It is fine to remove from what I've seen but he was doing the work and I wouldn't ask him to do something he's uncomfortable with. Plus he's a pretty experienced well known gun smith and even worked on the ACRs law enforcement R&D team so if he's wanting it a certain way and says it won't really make a difference to remove it, I'll usually take his advice. |

Nice cut the chunk out of the middle and see how low it can go lol |
I modeled about 20 versions before settling on the above. I even did one with the entire top removed! I was thinking I don't need forward assist and I'd just add a recoil buffer elsewhere I'm happy with where I'm at and I'll let you guys chase more carrier ounces.

| Mod 1 is really good. I do them also. It depends on what look you are going for. The ball mills that Mod 1 uses looks really cool. They do Nitride coating as well. My cut bolt that I did is actually there right now getting the coating. I felt like upgrading from Cerakote. |

Gonna send it in to mod 1 tomorrow.
Lighten and ceracoat black. Turn around 1-2 weeks. $150-200. Their FB page shows some great work and they have been very responsive on email and by phone with all my questions. Assembled carrier weight before milling 0.96lbs... |

The factory gas port works good with a lightened carrier. Reducing the port slightly might help but it's not worth the extra cost in doing it. I'd only fine tune it if I was building a new barrel versus buying one or using the one I had. Also, I was thinking I might use a different barrel and just build it from that. Looking for a light profile and maybe convert the gas system to carbine length. It all depends on cost and I'm trying to figure that all out. Thanks for the info. |
| The brand new Acr's come with 1/7 barrels. They are the ones that have the BAD style safety. I personally prefer carbine length barrels for 5.56. I plan on making a 14.5 fluted setup sometime soon for my personal build. I honestly like the factory 1/9 barrels (which are closer to 1/8) |
