Dad just gave his Model 48, it has a cheap scope on it. Any recommendations?
It is 12 years old, anything I need to do to it besides oil it up?

It needs to be a scope designed for an air rifle.  If you put a cheap rifle scope on it, the unique recoil impulse will damage the reticle.

You don't just oil it up.  Oil should not get into the air chamber as this causes dieseling and creates pressures and heat that the compression seal is not designed for.  It will leak and shoot poorly if you do.

There is a chamber lube made by RWS that won't diesel.   The other moving parts such as the linkage and pivot points could be lubed with a good gun oil.

It is a strong recoiling spring rifle that with the right pellets (ones it likes) should shoot quite well.  However, it will likely take you a while to learn how to shoot it to its capability.

I have one and there are a few things you should know.

You need a scope rated for magnum air guns.  Talk to the boys at Hawke and see what they have to say.

As mentioned, do not use anything but synthetic chamber lube and not much of it either.

Buy a good mount and if it has pins to secure it, use them.  The mount will walk if not secure.

Make a mark, with a razor, on the scope where the rear lock ring meets it.  This will tell you if it is walking.

Keep in mind a spring air gun recoils both back and forward due to spring effect.

If your main seal is good a light lube ( whats designed for spring piston air guns ) , some spring gel / grease and the pivot points on the side cocking mech is all you need.

( And some pellets )

Buy the lube designed for spring piston guns and some felt cleaning pellets you shoot thru the bore if you are ordering stuff.

I ended up with a Nikon EFR on mine.  Rated for air rifles and the glass is very clear.
