I have been looking hard at a Ruger GSR and found on some other forums that there is a Export version with a 18" Barrel with no comp or flash hider in stainless.
Does anyone have any intel on these? |
My local C3 has a stainless GSR, but it is 16" with the FH and has a walnut stock on it... If an Export GSR exists, it's not available (readily) in the US yet. I've never seen or heard of it before now, but a quick Google search turned up tons of pics and info on it. I found a link (below) to a thread where a guy has both and did a side-by-side comparison.
That pic was stolen from: Here I found this picture interesting also. This is an Export model with the irons and scout rail removed:
Link: Aussie shooter's forum The stainless looks nice with the gray laminate stock, much better than the walnut in my opinion, but I really like the threaded muzzle on the "domestic" version (do we have to start calling it that now?) and the point of the GSR, to me, was having a smaller, handier bolt gun that was suppressor-ready. The Export version kills that for me, although I see the practical and legal reasons for the changes Ruger made to it. Bottom line: I'd rather re-finish an off-the-shelf GSR with stainless Cerakote than purchase the Export model, but my needs aren't everyone else's needs and variety is the spice of life. |
| That's interesting. The stainless one I saw locally was about $900 here, and I read on the Aussie forum that they were paying about $1,200 USD which is easily attributable to destination costs, import tax, etc. But I'm wondering if the excessive prices in the UK are due to taxes, extremely limited availability, or what? |

Not sure why they cost so much, but it's the same with pretty much everything. Two or three times the cost of a firearm in America is not unusual. I knew a couple of people that were interested in these rifles when they were first introduced, but they all changed their minds once the retail price was given. |

Sweet looking rifles!
I am interested in the export version because of the longer barrel and the lack of threads or a flashhider. I have nothing against them, in fact I am looking at a Regular GSR as my one and only bolt action rifle, but if the export version is avalible I would rather have that. For the sole reason I may move to a non gun friendly state in the future (California) and would rather not spend more money on a non threaded barrel or a rifle with a plain barrel if the laws change even more there. I got rid of two .308 bolt actions I had some time ago and regret it (A Kassnar and a REM SPS). So the next one I purchase will be held onto for a long time and I would like to have the capability of the using the scout scope or adding the XS rail and using a standard scope, along with having iron sights and a detachable mag. |

It definitely sounds like the GSR is the right gun for you, and I understand now why the Export version is so appealing. I haven't heard of any being for sale domestically yet but I'm sure it won't be long before Ruger offers it here stateside. I would hope not, anyways. |

Bummer. I think they'd sell here just fine. Everyone who wants one should bombard them with emails to be forwarded to the "marketing department" so maybe you can get something to happen. ![]() I like it too. Just keep all the features and add the 18' or 20' Barrel. |
