Brand new out of box. Might as well been firing a bolt action rifle. Had to "bump" the bolt closed after every shot. Any ideas?

Did you field strip, clean and lube it prior to shooting?  What ammo and mags were used?

Also...ensure the op rod spring guide is installed correctly.

The gun shop field stripped it before I took it home. The mag was the factory mag from Ruger. Bought the ammo from the shop as well, TulAmmo. The guy at the shop suggested it would need a 1000 or so round "break-in" period. Is there any truth to that?

No...I don't agree with the 1K rd break in...however Tula is the most underpowered ammo you can find.  My suggestion is to get a few hundred rds of brass cased ammo to break it in and then if you want to try steel cased again...get some Bear ammo.....Brown, Silver or Gold.  Remember to clean your chamber after shooting steel cased ammo also.  Can't do any better than factory mags.
