| I want to build a sbr and need advice as to how to go about it. Would anyone who has done this please give me some direction? |

Yeah, not a lot of information provided. A trust will own the sbr as I plan to cut down an existing barrel. 5.56 and I have been told locally to just put it on a form one to the atf. But I have been told that the e-file system is kind of finicky so may send it in snail mail.
Thanks all. |
| Me too, i wanna build a 10.5" .223 AR-15 SBR on the trust that i have my can with. Ive heard i need to get the lower engraved first, reading the form looks like i can engrave it when the stamp is approved. Im also curious about weather eform or paper form is faster, and is there any reason to pay the $50 for a dealer to submit the form on my behalf? |

First, obtain a good quality lower, don't go cheap as it will be registered.
For paper route (what I did): Fill out a form 1 for said lower as well as a certificate of compliance. You need two copies of these. For the form 1, it needs to printed front and back and everything needs to be written in black pen. Mail that out along with a copy of your entire trust and a money order/check for $200, I even think theres an updated version of the form 1 that allows you to write down your card information and pay that way. Its really a pretty simple process. You can collect a few pieces for your build while you wait, but be careful not to buy everything until your stamp comes in. Honestly the most difficult part of the process is making sure you filled the form 1 out properly i.e writing the right model name, full serial #, the right abbreviation for caliber...i know from experience

Easy process once you gather the info. The wait is the worst part. Its a little out dated but will help you get an idea. Part 1- http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/2012/10/daniel-zimmerman/want-a-short-barreled-rifle-heres-how/ Part 2- http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/2012/10/daniel-zimmerman/how-to-get-an-sbr-part-ii-the-paperwork/ Now decide how you want to file it. You have time to get a trust going lots of templates sold online for very cheap. Just fill in the blanks print have it notarized and scan it save it. You can buy one off silencershops web site. I got one for cheaper called wildcat trust. Used it for 4 NFA items so far and the guy is really helpful. Lawyer out of kentucky. Took me less than an hour to buy it, fill it out drive to the post office. Eforms can be a pita just make sure you save it often as you go. Fill in the blanks, upload your trust document, add a payment option. Easy, sit back and wonder how they accept your payment in 3 days and take 5 months to send your stamp. Ive only used trusts to file so i cant offer much else but it cant be very hard either way. My CLEO is easy to deal with but ive never had to bother. Hope that helps good luck |

I just got my trust and will be submitting e filing a Form 1, soon, for a lower that I want to build into an SBR. I have heard multiple people say "make sure you don't mess up on the form". Can anyone give me specifics/things to pay attention to/common mistakes, so that I get it right the first time.
Thanks, Dan |

First I would go to the pic threads (both AR platform and non) and see if there is something that catches your eye or something you want to replicate or alter slightly to make it your own. This can also generate inspiration from scratch as well.
Then get a parts list together. Then go read the guides that BigWaylon has provided. Then go back and read them again. Lots of information and some could get lost. After that, decide what route you want to take. Buy all parts with the exception of a barrel or the stock (I like to keep a pistol buffer tube on hand so I can run the pistol and just wait till i have stamp in hand to order the stock. (This assumes using a stripped lower transferred as "other" and not an existing rifle receiver) If you have an assembled rifle and are chopping, you'll need to wait for the stamp in hand to have the chop done or at least receive the chopped barrel into your possession. <-- There are some grey areas to this as I am sure some may disagree, but I would advise NOT to try to find a loophole and have it sent to your buddy's house or family's house at a different address. the point being you do NOT want to have all the components readily available to assemble an SBR without proper paperwork supporting its approval. WAIT for stamp to come in. Receive stamp. Pew pew and I personally went with the individual form 1. No hassles from CLEO, great guy, and a very quick turnaround last spring/ summer. YMMV |
