I know that the ATF requirements are for a .003 engraving depth, but I'm not real sure how to verify or quantify that. I had a receiver engraved by a local gun shop with a laser that regularly does engraving work, but the depth seems similar to what you'd see in cosmetic or logo engraving. It's barely discernible by feel, and it seems like with a Sharpie treatment that it would virtually disappear. Should the proper depth engraving be pretty evident by feel?
