So I own a 16" Noveske upper chambered in 300Blackout. I bought it a couple years back and wanted to get into the caliber. 16" was easy and fast as there was no tax stamp required.
Anyways now I want an 300 blackout SBR. I am leaning towards a 8.5" that I can attach my 762sdn6 on. So here are my options 1. Sell the 16" barrel to fund the project. 2. Cut the barrel down to 8.5" and use it. I am leaning towards cutting it down. I imagine I would take a decent hit trying to sell a used barrel. Plus trying to find a noveske replacement would be very hard as they are always sold out. I already have 560 in the barrel and it shoots great. So am I crazy? What would you do? Any help is greatly appreciated. |
| You are most likely crazy. There is another option. You can cut your barrel down and permanently install a sleeve that will bring the OAL of the barrel/sleeve to over 16". This is good if you shoot mostly or all suppressed and gives you some of the advantages of an SBR without the tax stamp. Having said all that, it's easier to just SBR it and cut it to your desired length. With all that AND the wait, the Leonidas might be a better option. If you sell your current upper, you're not into the new one for as much as you might think. |

Cut it. (assuming it has a pistol-length gas system) This. If it has a carbine length gas system, then sell it. Or cut it down shorter past the original gas port and have a new one redrilled. You'll want a pistol gas length for the 8.5" gun. Quoted:

There's no way to get a 762-SDN-6 off the gun if you have it under a permanently mounted sleeve. They're hard enough to take off when they're tucked under a rail. |

I don't have that suppressor or anything else from AAC. |

Any suggestions on who I should talk to about doing the cutting? ADCO. |
| Make sure to get the gas port opened up. From a 16" to an 8.5" is gonna have a bigger port. As to suppressor under rail, if you've got a YHM or some type of direct thread it wont be an issue. Something with a latch, you'll need a rail with a large enough vent hole to fit a tool to release the latch. |

/thread I just sent them a barrel to have cut down and re-threaded, it arrived on Tues and was back in the mail Thurs morning. Quoted:

I have a 15" Spikes BAR rail already on the gun so the can should fit with no issues. |

I had a brain fart. I remember talking to noveske when I bought it and they said it was the largest on the market. I would assume its the same size on all their barrels but ill call on Monday and ask. |

Barrel actually showed up today, work looks great. I'm blown away by the turn around time. Price was $71.00 for cutting an 1" off and timing a muzzle break. They will definitely be getting more work from me. |

Well I just got off the phone with Noveske. He advised me not to cut it down as the gas port is sized different on the shorter barrel. You can still cut it. If the gas port is too big, use an adjustable gas block. If it's too small, open the port up. Someone like ADCO should be able to cut it down and give you input on which route you need to take. |

I ran into this before when trying to help somebody that wanted to cut down their Noveske. They had a longer barrel and wanted to cut it to match a shorter barrel length Noveske offered. They wouldn't divulge what size they drilled theirs. Very different from the dealings I had with Bison Armory. I bought a 16", and wanted to cut it to 12". The owner happily told me what size they used on their 16" and their 11.5". As graysonp said, ADCO can probably help. I know they told me that had charts with calibers and gas systems they've tested before I got the info straight from Bison. |
