I am in the process of filling out my form 1. Will this work for block 4i ? "For the security of a free state per the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution." I don't see why not.

I use personal collection.

You might get one of those examiners who thinks the 2A is for muskets and that's all

If I was gunna put something out of the ordinary, I would use "conversational piece"

How about the proven standard "For All Lawful Purposes" ? Or "Collection and Investment"

I have approved forms that say both.

I wouldn't poke the bear. Just go with " Any lawful purpose."

My 26 forms say: "For all lawful purposes and to enhance collection."

Well, I do see why not. That is, if you ever want to actually get a Form 1 approved.

What happened is that a few years ago, some jokesters filed Form 1's with things like "to hunt zombies" in that box. They got approved, and jpegs of the approved Form 1's were posted on the internet.

It took awhile, but those posts made their way to both upper-level ATF administrators and to ATF Legal Branch. And an edict was issued: Don't send them back for correction. Just flat-out reject them, and they can start the 10-month wait all over again.

Now, please recognize that ATF and the NFA examiners do not know you personally. So when you put something like "zombies" or "defending the Constitution" in that box, they have no idea how literally to take you. The only check you pass/have passed is a NCIC or equivalent, and we know that there are folks who have been cleared by those who never should have had guns. Just read the news.

And that is how it should be: In this country, we are innocent until proven guilty, and thus sane until proven crazy, etc.

But when ATF, and an NFA examiner, signs and approves in writing a Form 1 listing "to hunt zombies" or "to defend the Constitution" for a total stranger ... and that total stranger acts out, or decides that enough is enough ... the ATF and the examiners potentially become liable in civil and criminal ways -- and certainly in the eyes of the public, as seen in the media.

I'm sure you are sane and law-abiding, and will always be so. Right? But I'm not sure that is true for everyone who might put some wild or wise-ass reason on the form. And I certainly wouldn't be willing to risk my job, or face civil or criminal proceedings, based on my total belief in the sanity or morality of someone I have never met, or even spoken to.

So yeah, I would reject anything other than "for all lawful purposes." And so does NFA Branch.

Your Mileage May Vary.
