There's a local gun show this weekend and I want to pick up a short barrel upper.  I live in Ohio so, will I be allowed to purchase this, and if so, what hoops am I gonna hafta jump thru to get it??  I almost got one at last month's show but ended up buying an HK416 22lr instead.  The one vendor had several short barrel uppers but I never got the chance to ask him about them.

I love shooting the HK when I can find ammo, but I want to change the upper on my Stag 2T, and go with something shorter or a different caliber than the 5.56.  Will I be able to get a short barrel?

What do you want to do with this upper?  Are you going to use it for a pistol?  If so you cannot have a lower with a stock, and you can't have a vertical fore-grip.  If you want to have a short-barreled rifle then it is HIGHLY illegal for you to mate a short-barreled upper with a rifle lower until you have gone through several hoops, taxes, and paperwork.

I wouldn't buy it until you have educated yourself on the laws, and decided on what you plan to do with it.

You don't have to go through any hoops for the upper. The uppers are not tracked. The lower you currently own would have to be SBR'd. Get the paper work, fill it out, get finger printed, have the Sheriff sign it, mail it in with $200.00...wait 6 months until you get it back, get the lower engraved then you could put the upper you bought on the lower you have. Meanwhile, keep the newly purchased upper at your parent’s house...or brother's house, a friend, whatever. As long as there are no other firearms (lower to mate it too) in the house they and you are good to go. There would be no constructive possession.

Thanks, i appreciate the info.   I'm mainly only planning on using the short barrel upper for target shooting and home defense.   I don't have any neighbors, and my property has woods behind it and on one side of it.  The other side has a huge field of nothing.  I have some targets set up behind my house, down next to my storage garage.  It's perfect for target shooting.   I have a big Rottweiler and a Cane Corso watching the house when i'm not home. I don't tell a lot of people that both of them are huge babies that wouldn't hurt a flea.  They make a lot of noise if someone pulls in my driveway tho, and i doubt anyone would want to take the chance of breaking in.

Is that the same type of paperwork/process I'll need to get a suppressor for my new HK?  I've been having a hard time tracking down the owner of the local gun shop to get all the paperwork done for a suppressor.  I was told that the owner of the shop requires all the paperwork be done thru him, so I've been trying meet up with him to schedule an appointment.  He'll be at the gun show this saturday but i doubt he'd have the time to sit and got thru all of it with me.

Thanks again for the info guys.

Most of the answers you seek are in the Armory under the Class III Forums

ETA: The toughest part about the NFA process is the waiting..Other than that, it's not that hard at all..

Is the Stag 2T a complete rifle? Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't there some issues with registering a lower as an SBR that was originally a complete 16+ inch rifle?

Not an issue.

The NFA section here is full of lots of good info. I would get a lower and build a pistol to have while you wait for the stamp.

jBoy723 and TeeRex,

Thanks for all the info, I greatly appreciate it.  I'm the type of person that finds a new hobby, then obsesses about it till something else gets my attention.  In 2006 I got a Jeep SRT8 and got obssessed with drag racing, and engine modifications.  In 2010 I got a two door jeep wrangler and started obssessing with lift kits, large tires and the whole offroad experience.  I now have a 2012  4 door, all black Rubicon that's ready for the arctic.  I've always liked shooting since I was a little kid.  I got my first AR a few years ago and am now obssessed with home defense and the whole shooting experience.

I apologize for all the noob questions but now I'm starting to collect ARs before our President gets his way, and only criminals will have them.  I refuse to be a helpless target!

OP - if you want to buy a short upper there is no problem with that. But you can NOT use it without either 1) a registered SBR lower, 2) a registered AOW lower, or 3) a pistol lower. To have a registered SBR or AOW, you must submit paperwork to the ATF (just like the suppressor) and wait for approval. To get a pistol lower you can either purchase a complete pistol, a complete pistol lower, or a stripped lower and build it into a pistol.

My personal advise though is to wait on purchasing the short upper until you're up to speed with all the legalities, because the fun is not worth the hassle if you get tripped up by not knowing the law.

Also if your dealer is dragging his feet, you are free to purchase from any dealer in the state, so feel free to shop around. Sometimes a drive is worth it!

Also, you CAN have a vertical foregrip on a pistol as long as the OAL is 26 inches I believe.
