I have a 10.5'' PSA upper and I'm getting 223 TAP 75 gr rounds averaging around 2160fps out of that barrel.   But some cheapo silver bear is sgetting 200-300 fps faster out of that rifle....   That leads me to 2 questions.

1. Will the TAP fragment at that speed?
2. Should I drop down in weight to  Speer Gold Dots or Winchester JHp?

Thanks guys.

Cheapo Silver Bear is a lighter bullet, hence the higher velocity.

223 Factory ammo is loaded to lower pressure so it can be safely used in ALL 223 chambered weapons.  Try using 5.56 NATO ammo (Black Hills, SSA, Mil-spec).

You can feel the difference when you shoot NATO spec ammo.

What weight are the silver bear projectiles? If they're lighter, that's why they're coming out of the barrel faster.

As far as fragmentation goes, the heavier bullet relies less on impact velocity to do damage.

My less than scientific testing shooting at a soft dirt mound at distances from 30ft to over 100 yds with a 10.5 barrel on a 5.56 AK47 seem to indicate that the lighter bullet makes a huge furrow at 30ft, does not consistently move a lot of dirt at 40-50 yds, and pokes tiny little holes at 80yds and further. The 62 and 65gr rounds were more consistent at 50 yds, and the heavier rounds did pretty well out past 100 yds.

Just for the record, 762x39 made big holes at every range through a 7" barrel, even well past 100 yds when I could actually hit what I was aiming at. ;)

Thanks for the replies gents.   The silver bear's are 62gr rounds which I realize is why they're coming out hotter.      I guess my question is whether I should switch to a lighter weight bullet (not the silver bears ) with this barrel to insure it's doing the most damage on two legged intruders as possible.     I feel very  confident in the 75gr rounds doing some damage out of my 16'' ARs, but the velocity drop just had me concerned...

Heavier is better.  Lighter projectiles will over penetrate at short range.  Your "average" home intruder will be less than 30 ft from you.

Hmm..   That's the opposite of everything else I've ever seen.  For example, most 115gr 9mm JHPs penetrate 11-13'' while most 147gr JHPs penetrate 14-18''.

Ballistic gel testing does not equal real world experience.

I can drill holes thru coyotes with 55gr loads, 75gr loads usually just barely make it out the other side with a big hole.

Heavier projectiles will tumble quicker and retain more mass upon fragmentation.

good reading

That was a good article, thanks.

What kind of TAP? The new Superformance stuff really sucks in a short barrel due to burn rate.

It was the 75gr 223 BTHP stuff in the red box (#80265).

Video Review Link––-Chrono starts at ~5:00 mark.

Hornady 75gr - specs 2790 fps from a 20" barrel

SSA 77gr - specs 2750 fps from a 16" barrel

The Hornady ammo is using a lighter load and/or slower powder.

According to Ramshot load data for 24" barrrel:

223 Rem - 77gr BTHP 2736 fps @ 54,300 psi

5.56 Nato - 77gr BTHP 2868 fps @ 61,250 psi
