Building my first AR (and SBR) and was orginally going with a 7.5" AA complete upper until I started reading how suppressing a 7.5 SBR doesn't work out too well.  So I have decided to re-think that and now am going with a 10.5".  Any ideas?  I need a complete upper.  I don't have the expierence to build one from scratch.  AA doesn't seem to sell a 10.5".  They have a 11.5" but they MSRP it for nearly what Noveske does for their own 10.5" uppers.

Any complete 10.5" uppers in the ~$900 range or will I have to fork out the money for a Noveske?

Im assuming you mean complete as in containing bolt carrier group and charging handle?

There's

LMT
Palmetto State Armory (FNH barrel)
Daniel Defense

and probably some others

You don't need experience to build your own. How do you think everyone else started out? Build it and you'll be that much more proud of your rifle. Not to mention the ability to trouble shoot and repair it instead of dropping if off at the nearest gunsmith and saying "fix it". Just my opinion but of course it's your build and your decision.

ETA: I built this one from stripped upper and lower receivers and I'm FAR from being a genius...

Building the upper looks daunting.  I have watched several youtube videos so far on building out the lower and I feel I could be able to do that with minimal problems...

It does seem daunting, but it's not that bad.  With that said, here is a Troy 10" upper that includes the BCG, charging handle, and Troy BUIS.  The price is $921 (I think).

Not sure how to make it hot.  You might want to call, though, because the picture shows black, but the link has FDE in it.

If you have the slightest bit of mechanical ability, you'll have no problems. When you order the parts to assemble the upper, order a GI issue barrel wrench (usually not more than 20 bucks) and that's really all you should need as far as specialty tools. A small selection of punches and some vise grips with a few wraps of electrical tape are all I've ever used for assembly and I've never broken or scarred a receiver. The first time I assembled a lower, I used the step by step instructions from this sight on the "build your own" section and it was surprisingly easy. It's one of those things that once you finally just do it, you'll wonder what you were so worried about.

I'd just fork over the extra $ for a MK18 upper by Noveske.

Building an upper isn't too hard if you have the right tools and a bench mounted vise.  Unless you absolutely want to build it yourself though I think its worth it to get something the professionals put together unless you want to learn how to assemble an upper.  Also a few of the rails out there require special tools for assembly so keep that in mind depending on your parts selections.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys.  I still have a lot more reading to do if I want to even attempt to build an upper.

I'll check into the PSA uppers.  I hadn't heard of them.

Please feel free to IM or email me through the site if you decide to build and have ANY questions. This site was extremely helpful to me and I'm always looking to return the favor.

LMT builds a good 10.5 upper. They also have the MRP CQB that you can quick change barrels and such with. That is what I run and I just went from a 12" piston set up to a 10.5 DI set up in less than 5 minutes! I ran the DI set up this past weekend and it ran like a dream. No gas face either when I ran it suppressed..

I appreciate that man. I think I will go ahead and try and build one.  After reading the site until my eyes bleed and watching Youtube until I could't take it anymore, it really doesn't appear that it is terribly difficult.

I guess now begins the process of research and building it out..

LMT 10.5" Upper $399

I bought one, they're good to go with quick shipping!!

Had a MOE handguard, BCM BCG and PRI charging handle, so I was good to go when it came in.

I ended up going with PSA's 10.5 complete upper: http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.php/ar-15-05/complete-uppers/psa-10-5-hammer-forged-upper.html

I had planned on building one after the recommendations but I just had a hard time finding parts and I didn't want to purchase from 6 different online vendors to complete the upper.  The only thing I don't like is the A2 FSB.  I may remove that as it isn't wielded to the barrel after a phone call to PSA confirmed it.
