Hey all,
I'm going to be starting an SBR build AND a pistol build. I am aware of most of the intricacies involved with keeping them in the same area, i.e. constructive possession, blah blah. My issue is this. I recently heard from a local manufacturer that you are no longer able to purchase ONLY a stripped lower from them and register it as an SBR. In other words, they are telling me I am only allowed to buy a complete SBR from them and they won't, as the manufacturer, sell me a lower for SBR'ing (in order to avoid having it engraved). It didn't make sense to me, so anybody have any input/clarification? |

All SBR's need make/MFG engraving. |

I might be confused, but they won't sell you a stripped lower because you want to sbr it? Or won't sell you any stripped lower? Just tell them your making a 16'' rifle out of it, screw them you can do whatever you wish to it after they sell it to you. So go back buy a lower don't tell them your sbr'ing it and go about your way, or take your business else where. |
| It was my understanding that you could buy a lower from a manufacturer, where they send the paperwork off and list it as a manufactured sbr. This prevented having to have your trust name engraved on the rifle. They are saying they can't do this anymore. They do not however have a problem selling me anything I want to do anything I want with it. I was just trying to go that route so I didn't have to engrave my rifle with any extra bs |

If they do t have lowers with their info already on them then they will still have to be engraved. If you are close with the dealer then they might take your upper, make the SBR, and transfer it to you on a form 4. |

That's not saying a dealer may sell you a SBR and keep the upper but it had to leave the factory as a complete rifle. |

It's always been a grey area, selling Lowers as short barreled rifles. This is because it's not in fact an SBR unless it's got a >16" bbl on it
There were a few companies selling lowers as factory SBRs and companies that would allow you to send an upper in and they'd do it that way. But that was a couple years ago |
