So i can own a AR rifle and i can own a AR pistol . But its a big no no to put the upper from one on the other ? Can you only own one or the other ? And what is a pistol if it has a foregrip on it ?

So i can own a AR rifle and i can own a AR pistol. - Yes
But its a big no no to put the upper from one on the other ? - Correct (unless the lower is a registered and stamped SBR)
Can you only own one or the other ? - Nope - You can own both.
And what is a pistol if it has a foregrip on it ? - AOW

If these answers are incorrect I fully expect the right answers to be forthcoming and I'll edit this post.

This info is the short version, but is correct.

Please do add info to complete the long version.  I most certainly am an idiot when it comes to anything NFA and would like to have the most complete and correct info.  It does please me that I understand enough to have the short version info correct.

Aye. Confusing and sometimes opposing ones at that.

Well, what you said was correct.  I just didn't want to confuse him as the answer to his question was basically "yes".  But if you have a "pistol" lower you can have an NFA length upper and be covered.  If you only have one rifle lower, I'd hold off on getting an NFA length upper until you have tax stamp in hand or a pistol lower.  But these conversations always go back and forth and this is really just my take on it.

ok.  One can never venture to guess what an agent would determine.

I certainly do not want to pass incorrect info.  I have tried to type meaningful info and it hasn't worked out for me.  Partially because I am nowhere near an expert and partially because I am not an attorney.

Some one is going to have to post the proper information if I don't have it right. If you have an AR lower you can not posses a sub 16" upper.  If you posses a pistol AR lower you can posses a sub 16" upper.  If you have both it would be best if yo only possessed one sub 16" upper.

Proper wording is killing me right now.  I know what I think to be the correct answer, but am not able to properly type it.

So then i should wait on buying the upper for my pistol AR if i don't have the lower yet ?

I would suggest not having a sbr upper without having atleast a lower with a pistol tube on it until you get your stamp back.  Atsleast then you can say it resides on that lower as a pistol setup and it can still be legally used until then.

One more thing to add and confuse the OP. There are several threads in the AR pistol section stating that you can have a pistol with a vertical fore-grip IF the overall length is over 26" ala the Tommy Gun Pistol. It is no longer a pistol but a firearm? Confusing.
There are letters from the ATF posted in the threads. I will add them as I locate them.

" But its a big no no to put the upper from one on the other ?"

Sub 16" pistol upper on your rifle lower, big no no without an approved tax stamp.

However, rifle upper (or any length upper) on the pistol lower, perfectly legal.
