it could vary depending on the stock you use.

29.5" is close enough for government work.

By standard, you mean the plain jane M4 stock, correct?

I put 30" for my 11.5" SBR with a MOE stock.  I bet you could put 29" and be fine.

Look, no one from The Government is going to show up at your door with a micrometer in hand. The only time precise measurement is a legal issue is when a Title 1 (non-NFA) rifle slips under the minimums of 16" barrel and 26" overall. Then, yes, an incorrect dimension or measurement is a problem.

But FWIW, my Colt Model 6933 was registered via a Form 2 by Colt which listed a barrel of 11.5" and an overall length of 30.5". And yes, it left Hartford with a milspec M4 stock.

Now, since Colt (a) has been manufacturing and registering NFA items since 1934 (Thompsons, etc.) and (b) today is quite likely the leading manufacturer of factory SBRs and MGs, producing tens of thousands of them, I'm pretty confident in using the exact lengths they list when registering NFA.

So if you are going with a 10.5" barrel and are using a milspec or similar stock, IMHO 29.5" is a safe bet.

Or you can just worry this thing to death. I have a dog who does that with tennis balls.
