| Will a cobalt tap tap a finished hardened carrier? Had no luck with standard high speed steel type. |
| Have a carrier I am replacing the key on and it had a factory defect in the threading of one hole. Only has about three completely form threads. The old socket screw that came out had the last thread malformed by the carrier because of it. You can tightened it but not be sure of having the correct torque value. If it was the back screw I would just put it back on the way it was but it is the front screw. I will try a cobalt one since they are advertised for use in harder metals and see if it works. Only need to finish out about 1 and 1/2 threads for the screw to seat properly. |

Cobalt should do it, I've tapped carriers with them before, it just takes some patience. Once you get through that surface park and hardening it gets a lot easier. Make sure to use some good cutting oil.
Carbide would also work, but you'll likely snap one right off if you try it by hand, |

So, if I get this right, you want to correct a factory defect. Why? Just let them do it ^^This I never understand all these posts in here about fixing a factory issue. You bought a firearm, not a toaster. Send it back to the factory under warranty for factory defect. I understand wanting to tinker and be your own gunsmith, but.....stop. |

If it's under warranty, and they'll pay shipping both ways and not have it for several weeks then sure.
I've had them send me replacement parts with a prepaid RMA box before. But I've never personally felt the need to send a firearm back to the factory, most of my firearms weren't purchased as complete firearms, after all .

I have never understood why someone would change a key on a carrier that was new enough that it would be able to be sent back if they even knew where it originally came from. Also never understood why someone would waste time out of their life posting worthless responses. |

Also never understood why someone would waste time out of their life posting worthless responses. The definition of "Lifetime Warranty" eludes even the best of us. Quoted:

if they even knew where it originally came from. It was meant to deter others from trying things outside of their skill-set because they saw it on the internet. It was meant to get the point across that sometimes things are best left to professionals. Lets keep this gunsmith related. |
