I helped a friend of mine build his first rifle. We shot a mix of Hornaday .223 training ammo and Independenc 5.56. The Hornaday training ammo performed flawlessly no duds in 100 rounds. Using the Independence however he had 4 fail to fires in 40 rounds. After ejecting the rounds i exmined the primers and they appeared to have the same size and depth strike marks as the the pimers of the rounds that had performed correctly.  i  loaded them into my factory Colt and the fired fine.  I then took a whole box of his independence and fired it through my colt with no issues. I have fire over 2000 rounds of Independence and never had a problem with this ammo. What mechaical issue with the rifle could cause this issue.

Hammer spring installed upside down.
Firing pin protrusion not enough.

Is he using a full strength / mil. spec hammer spring - or a reduced power spring?

Did you try them in another gun? Maybe it's just that you got 4 bad rounds and that's all?

Yes took all four and shot them out of my colt. Primer strikes did not appear any deeper than before when they ftf.

And your sure they were full hammer strikes and not hammer follow hits? If full hits then maybe it was just primers that were not fully seated? Sometimes if the primer is poking out just a bit when the firing pin hits it it will seat it, but not have enough force to set it off.
