I just got my vice block set in the mail, now I need help understanding how to use it.

The lower vice block is a no brainer, easy to see how to use it.

The upper vice block leaves me wondering;  Which part gets clamped in the vice?  The thicker part (opposite the hinge) that orients the upper in the upright position?

AND, how tight do I clamp it?  Clamping the vice block around my upper by hand, there remains a gap of 3/16" between the two halves of the block.  Should I clamp it in the vice enough to close this gap?

And, what do I do with the tool that slides into the upper where the BCG goes?
Thanks in advance for the expert advice!

Help yourself out and tell what blocks you have.

After a re-read close the uppers gap in the vice.  I've only needed this type of block when dealing with NM tubes.  A barrel block will do most any AR.
I'd send the lower block back for a refund, it's not needed

It is a Pro-Mag vice block set.  Lower block came with the set, wouldn't be able to return a piece of a set.

Look's like the same as BM, Brownells and others sell.
I'd return it and buy a set of barrel block's and a TM., and pocket the change
