DPMS LR 308 I like this thing alot, it shoots excellent, but without a mag in and when the bolt is locked back

if I tap the buttstock the bolt flies closed.

What do I need to do to fix it?

Thanks

oh come on now? I know someone has had this problem before.

No help?

AR-10 section might have more traffic for more answers.

Post an update here if you figure it out somewhere else, I'm curious

You're in luck, I hope. I had the exact same problem. Sent it back to DPMS and it turns out the wrong size buffer was installed. The originally installed buffer was slightly longer, just enough to prevent the bolt from going back far enough for the catch to engage properly. The rifle functioned fine.

Although DPMS would not admit a screw up it appears to me an AR15 buffer got installed. This could be easy to do since they look so similar unless placed side by side. But it still cost me $37 in shipping to find this all out.

Hope this gets you fixed and going.

I don't believe this to be a problem.  Inertia or the momentum of the bolt and buffer moving backwards when bumped would easily overcome the friction of the bolt catch.  But if it happens with only a very slight tap or bump, and it irritated me, I'd probably look into relieving some of the bolt catch spring tension by cutting a coil or so.

My LR did the same thing but it took an abnormally hard rap on the butt to do it. I just made it a point not to ass-slam my rifle.

Normal for this to happen. If you are locking the bolt open in a range setting, use the plastic safety flag (open bolt indicator) as used in NRA matches. Blocks the bolt from fully closing. Runs about a buck each from the CMP.

BHO are designed to let you know its empty and time to reload, sometimes they also are steong enough to do this with a mag out.

But dont count on it ever. You can try a different bho and make sure its not ramped on the contact surface allowing it to be overcome but when its holding a bolt tha rest on a spring.....well there is just play there.

Now if its closing prematurely during mag changes, like after you remove the mag, then you have a problem

This.  Its normal for a rap on the stock to send the bolt forward.

What happens is that the leg on the front of the bolt hold open is not long enough to make solid contact on the magazine follower to get lifted high enough to have a good hold so you get easy shock off.

In the past I have fixed this by welding up the leg and re cutting it to work good.

My (5.56) AR will close under the same conditions, from a 2-3 inch free fall drop on to the butt stock.

This isn't abnormal. If you think about what's happening, you'll see why. When you tap it on the stock, the BCG has momentum. If it's enough momentum to just displace the spring and buffer, just a LITTLE bit, pressure gets taken off the bold hold open, BHO returns to down position, and bolt slams home.

Since the BHO isn't being pushed up by an empty mag, friction from the BCG is the only thing holding it in the upright position. As soon as that pressure is released, the BHO will return to the down position.
