I have a pistol that was my dad's, but the frame has split at the top near the sight. It appears to be a Ruger 22 knock-off.   I don't know that it is worth the effort to fix other than for the value that it was one of my dad's guns.

Recommendations on repair or disposal?   It was my dad's only handgun, but I don't like the idea of a potentially dangerous firearm sitting at the house.

Frame is pot metal no way to save it. You could JB weld it, but I would hang it on the wall. If your worried about someone trying to fire it, remove the firing pin.

Remove the firing pin, buy a wall display case, hang it in the man cave.

Yup, probably a German or Spanish cheap knock off of the Ruger.
Agreed on the pot metal frame and next to the throat area, broken in arguably one of the most critical areas of the frame.
Non repairable.
Also agree on making it a wall hanger.
Throw some weld bead in the chambers so it cannot chamber a round and render the item inert.
Shadow box it and have a nice memory of dad.

Thanks, guys.... I figured that it was not repairable....  I will take the grinder to the hammer!     It is most like a German pistol as he was stationed their twice.

I will probably just keep it in the old US 45 holster that he cut down for it....

I just wish he would have had more interest in shooting when I was a kid (after 21 years in the Army, he said he was done with shooting except for hunting).

Q. for you:  does the frame attract a magnet?  If so, it is steel.  If it is steel, it can and should be welded.

"pot metal" usually refers to an alloy of zink, aluminum and copper - typically Zamak-24 or something similar.  If the frame is "pot-metal," repair would probably not work (would just break again)  & agree with the framed wall-hanger idea.  Nice thing about that is its a constant reminder of your dad looking down on you from heaven.  My dad passed in 2011 & I will always treasure the 12 guage he gave me for Christmas when I was 15.
