Below is a picture of a surefire FH556-212A "tig welded" to a rifle to meet the requirement that it be permanently attached. It was done by a gunsmith. My question is, was it done properly? I'm not exactly sure if they went in at an angle or not, and I have heard that the Surefire FS/ adapter is a little different than the typical direct approach. Thanks for the input!

The weld on a Surefire muzzle device must be flush or preferably a smidge below the surface of the device. Side pinning or straight pinning is acceptable as long as it can withstand 200 ft/lbs of torque, that is the benchmark the ATF uses.

FYI-the warranty on a Surefire can is null and void if the device is pinned.

Do you have a reference for that 200 ft/lbs? I haven't seen that before and that is a whole lot of twist. I'm not sure that 200 ft/lbs won't shear a 1/8' pin.

Thank you, answers my question. Going to let this thread float away now.

I do not. I had heard this a while back and I have searched high and low for any reference to it but have not been able to get anything in writing. I did ask a field agent with the ATF at a gunshow the same question. He did not know a certain number but he stated that to the best of his knowledge the scope of the ruling is any attempt to remove the device through normal means would permanently damage the barrel beyond repair.
I have contacted the Technologies branch for a clarification.

Agreed it is a bunch of torque, on an AR I think one would snap the receiver before the barrel would twist.

Yeah, it would probably back the barrel out of the barrel extension. That has a lower torque value.

But the extension is pinned to the barrel with the locating pin.
Either way, something aint gonna be happy.

When I was in gunsmith school I saw another student (and member here) put a wrench on a pinned on brake (I guess just to see what would happen) and he actually ripped the threads off the last 1/2" of barrel. Waste of a barrel but impressive none the less.
