In your pics the "split nut" is no where near the end of its adjustment. Since you already have the fore end off (step one in the fix) slide the locking piece off, watch out for the spring and plunger under it, I have never seen one fly but you never know. Now loosen (turn counter clockwise) the knurled piece, you may need to jiggle down the front bearing piece but it will move. keep test fitting it until it is tight enough for your tastes. now replace the locking piece (a punch or pen helps to hold down the spring and plunger), reattach the fore end and you are done.

Thanks for the reply. I found some info on a similar Browning model and I started messing with it after I posted. Basically, did as you described. The problem is in order for the barrel to lock up tight, I have to adjust it so far down it locks up the detent. I locked it up with the detent in the down position so I could still get the takedown lever back in; I tried to spin the barrel nut with the takedown lever installed but was afraid of snapping the tooth. Locking up the detent renders the takedown lever ineffective I also stuck a flathead into the two sides of the splitwasher; one side was crushed more than the other. So, I worked them until equal and then some. It seemed to help a little in that I didn't have to spin the barrel nut as far to get the barrel to lockup tight. Something seems out of spec. I'm thinking either or a combination of; detent, takedown lever, and splitwasher.
I was going to get a new spring, detent, takedown lever and splitwasher from Numrich's What do you think? Also, how would I remove the spring and detent? It just sits there when I remove the takedown lever and I can't seem to find how it's held captive. |

I just pulled my model 24 out of the safe and tore it down, the detent goes through the spring and is peened over on the in side of the split ring and the barrel has a hole in it for the tail of the detent to drop in to when the locking piece is place.
The guy I bought my model 24 from had the lever installed upside down and it never engaged for him. he just set the barrel tight and left the locking lever stuck in its upside down, basically "off" position. You could just set the ring tight and not use the (uninstallable) locking piece like my model 24s prior owner did OR is you want to fix it so the locking lever works just file off part of the tail on the detent so it doesn't need the hole any more (as long as you are careful not to lose the now non captive spring and detent you would never know the difference). |
