Looking for a decent vice for maintaining the toys.  I had an MTM unit like this and hated it.  http://www.mtmcase-gard.com/products/shooting/gun-cleaning-rmc-1.html

Any suggestions for something to work on toys like the M1A, AR15, M590A1 etc?

I have one like THIS.  I've used it for years.  Believe it or not this is a way better deal than I got.  They've actually gotten cheaper!  It's not exactly perfect for AR's.  Especially if they have short barrels.  I usually separate the upper from the lower and clean separately.  I got mine from Midway.  Be aware that they're unusually high on shipping (at least they were.  I haven't ordered from them in a long time)  Overall it's a great vise for cleaning/scope/sight work.  It has some recessed areas to hold small parts/jags/patches while you're working.  Overall I love it but like anything that's supposed to be "one size fits all" it isn't.  I c-clamp mine to the work bench when I use it so it doesn't slide around.  If I had a bigger "shop" I'd just bolt it down.

THIS ONE is a newer design and may or may not be more versatile.  Especially for AR cleaning.

Thanks, I actually picked up the Tipton and a Brownells long gun cleaning mat to use.  So far they are working great for the AR and M1A.  I have not had a chance to use it for the pistols etc.

I am liking the design so far.  I clean the M1A upside down or using a bore snake to keep from working crap into the gas system.  I do have to move the center support around to clear the scope but that is also easily removable.

I was the exact opposite, I purchased the newer version to replace the older one I have been using; I sent the new one back and stuck with the original vise. The "front support" wouldn't move up or down without ALOT of force and there wasn't enough adjusment in it to completely level the rifle.
