I just bought an old S&W revolver and it came in less than satisfactory condition. The wear gives it character but the muzzle might concern me. Its been beat up pretty bad.
About how much would the smiths on this board charge to recrown the barrel? Would you use a lathe or the piloted hand cutting tools you see at Brownells? I'm not soliciting quotes but I would like a good idea of how much it will cost before I approach a local smith. |

Because of the problems with removing older revolver barrels, I would have used a piloted cutter.
The problem with many older revolvers is that there are no inserts for an action wrench that fit. Without a fitted insert for the wrench, there's no way to get the barrel off without a high risk of bending or cracking the frame. A sure way to ruin a gun is to use some sort of expedient method. One popular method that ruins a lot of revolvers is using a hammer handle through the frame window, or trying to pad a tool type wrench and gripping the frame. Cost to crown the barrel depends on the gunsmith's hourly price and his need to pay for the tools he uses to do the job. The tools ain't cheap. |
