| What type of machine with what specs would I need to perform engraving on firearms? I would assume most of the material would be aluminum. |

You have to specify the type of engraving you want. There's industrial engraving done with lasers and machines, and there is art engraving done by hand with chasing hammers and gravers, or reciprocating tools that hold the graver. See Ngraver and Gravermeister for the latter.
(The little cheap marking engravers are not even close to the same machine as used for chased engraving and won't work for that job.) A Deckel pantograph engraver is the Rolls Royce of non CNC machines, and Gorton machines are another good choice. One of these will likely serve you well. You might be able to find a Gorton for $500 or less on fleabay. |
