Looking into padding/wrapping for the lever on my new used Chiappa Takedown, I found paracord and leather wraps.  Wasn't happy with either.  Paracord wraps look great but the cool looking knotted pattern dug into the back of my fingers worse than the unadorned lever.  With leather I was looking for something that would have a firm but padded surface for cycling the action.  Leather strips were a bit hard.  Looking for an alternative I had trouble finding something in the right thickness and flexibility at the local leather shop without buying a whole lot more material than needed.  Then there were online sew on kits but they were like $30 and didn't fix the fact that leather attracts grime and doesn't like to get wet.

The alternative I came up with is bicycle handlebar wrap.  Positives include:
- Evolved over 150 years or so to protect hands from hard metal in all sorts of circumstances
- Neoprene/rubber type material is firm but with just the amount of give.  Softer wraps possible by adding layers but not really necessary.
- Cheap.  Readily available.  Easy to work with.  Available in virtually any color you want. I went for a nice boring black.
- Cut mine into thin-ish strips and wrapped without an overlap.  In this form it's close to leather strips to work with.  Finished with a paracord 'bumper' because the large loop on this rifle pokes out a bit.
- Perfect firm/padded balance.  Weatherproof.  Rinse off durability.

I'm sure this has been done before.  However, new to me and it sure works well if you're not concerned about maintaining a traditional/cowboy/mountain person look.

(sorry for the huge photo.. current online photo software doesn't have a size option when sharing)

I work in the garage and do all sorts of DIY projects.  It toughens my skin.  One of those will never be found on my rifles.

So.. OK.. I'll bite.  What kind of DIY project would toughen the backs of your fingers between the knuckle and middle joint?  Must have been kind of hard on the hair that used to grow there.
