When my grandfather passed away, I inherited a 1964 Model 94. (late 1964 judging by serial number, in the 2.79 million range) He was always a little frustrated with the rifle, because however well it shot, it was plagued with feeding problems. Under carrier jams are pretty common, and the overall smoothness of the action is severely lacking. We have a few older pre 64s, and they are smooth as butter.

Are there reproduction parts that are of higher quality than what is in it? Are there companies that make upgrade parts for these rifles?

It is a beautiful rifle, and I just want it to function as well as it looks.

I don't have any pictures, because it is disassembled right now. I took it apart to see if I could see anything that is wrong. I will get pictures once it is put back together.

Sorry, I had just finished putting the baby back to bed early this morning and left out some info. Thats what happens when I post half asleep.

It is a 30-30, and it does not matter what type of ammo is used. Everything from Federal PowerShoks to round nose reloads. I haven't found a round that won't cause the jam.

Basically, I am wondering if there are companies that make high quality replacement parts. I have read about problems with the carrier on post 64 models, with the piece just not being as high quality as older models. I am also wondering about the shell stop on the link. Could that not be holding the shells in the tube when they should be?

I'd start by looking at the cartridge stop. Is it worn, damaged, broken etc.?

I may be all wet and someone who really knows what he is talking about may show up in here.

also make sure you are racking the lever hard. some people try to baby them which can cause a jam. rip on the lever like you are going to break it and see what happens. most of the jams I see in cowboy shooting are because people aren't cycling the gun with enough authority

I read that no matter how slow you cycle the action, an under carrier jam shouldn't happen in a 94 if everything is OK with the rifle.

I have managed to get the rifle feeding without issues. I found that the loading gate was the problem. It was binding up on the carrier, causing it to not spring back down, and the rounds would leave the mag tube underneath the carrier.

I have done some grinding and polishing on the gate, and now the rounds load into the magazine tube much easier, and I have not had a single under carrier jam since doing so.
