I'm starting to look for a marlin 336 in 30-30.  I've noticed some have saddle rings and some don't.  Is there a specific model(s) that come with saddle rings?  If I buy one without a ring, how hard is it to get an aftermarket one and attach it?

While not a Marlin fan, I bought a Saddle Ring for my 357 Rossi carbine from Numrichs for $3.25, d&t the receiver, and screwed it on.  I think it came out just fine.

Older marlin 336 will have a saddle ring or have a good place to drill and tap for installing a saddle ring and stud. The new marlin with cross bolt safety did away with the saddle ring since the CBS is located where the saddle ring would be I make some CBS pins that eliminates the safety, I also make a combo pin that has a saddle ring stud machined into it available in both SS and blued steel. If you buy a newer marlin with a CBS it is very easy to add a saddle ring with out doing any permanent modifications to the rifle receiver and only takes a few minutes to install.

Nice work.  That's definitely the way to go if your Marlin has a CBS.

Thanks.

Yes I do in both stainless and blue steel along with SS saddle rings for the stainless puma/Rossi 92. If there is any interest PM I don’t want to break any COC on this forum for selling
Thanks

A lot of the Texans have them, here is a good link discussing those models:

I have a couple of rifles with saddle rings and they look cool but serve little function for me.  Plus they tend to cause noise (not a good thing in the field) and will rub on the reciever, wearing the finish.

Hang a little piece of leather on the ring and voila no rattle no scratches, still looks cool.....

I assume the saddle ring has something to do with carrying while mounted, but how is it used?  Always looked like something to get in the way to me...

The way it worked on the 1873 type Springfield carbines is the mounted soldier wore a ~2½" - 3" leather sling diagonally across his left shoulder to the right hip, like a sash. The bottom point had a spring clip that hooked into the saddle ring. Viola! The original single point sling!

I've seen this set up demonstrated by 10th Cav - Buffalo Soldier - reenactors. I would imagine saddle rings on the lever action rifles were used in a similar fashion. When one was bothered to do so.

To add to this, when mounted, there was a small leather 'cup' as part of the saddle gear, mounted in front of the right stirrup.  The muzzle of the slung weapon would rest in this cup.  The carbine buttstock would be upright in front of the rider's right leg.
