thought i'd post here in the lever forum to see if i get any more knowledgeable responses as pertaining to lever actions vs. in the optics forum. i'm aware of the leupold($$), and the bushnell(?). any other manufacturerers? i'm wanting to mount on my winny '94ae .30-30 and just bought a xo sights scout rail to put on it. i have a tasco shotgun scope...2.5x i believe, but the eye relief is just a tad short @ 5" . i would really be interested in a redfield extended eye relief scope if they come out w/ one. anyone heard if it's being kicked around any?

If you are going to do it, do it right.  Leupold.

Since it is a short-to-medium-range firearm, Either the Burris or Leupold single-power Scout scopes would be ideal.  Variable power would be an added expense, added weight, and overkill on a .30-30, IMHO..

You will definitely want a heavy plex reticle, which is easier to see and use when in the field.  Fine reticles are for range use, mostly.

i definitely agree. i have several including my "rx2" rangefinder and my ithaca deerslayer's, "ultimateslam" perched on top of it. i am a devout leupold believer. i was thinking of any other options including a redfield (if they'll even offer an eer scope) which is made by leupold and has their outstanding warranty and customer service. (shameless plug!)

I think of Burris and Leupold on more-or-less the same quality level in general, and as regards their single power Scout scopes in particular.  One nice thing about burris is that their warranty is for the device itself, as opposed to a warranty extended to the original buyer.

IOW, the third owner of a Burris scope can get warranty work done, while some other mfrs may confine the warranty to the original purchaser.

You might want to hang out on a regular basis at Natchez Shooting Supply's site, because they often run Burris (and other mfr) specials.  In addition, they sell Burris blems and re-furbs (with warranty) for a substantial discount.  Be patient, check often, and be ready to pounce, as the deals go fast.

FWIW, I have Burris, Leupold, and other scopes made by a variety of mfrs, so I have a decent background in quality (and not-so-quality) optics.

I strongly suggest Leupold QRW rings, as they are return-to-zero, QD/QA, and DS Arms has them for a decent price.  A quality unit equal to others costing much more, IMHO.  Unlike some other rings, the guts will not drop out when detached, a useful feature, IMHO.

Consider one of THESE.

Use the "donut" at 1X..............use the dot at 4X.

1X for up close.............4X for distance.

Best of both worlds for a lever gun.

tumor, it only has a 3.5" eye relief. no can do in a scout style set-up. i need at a minimum of 6-7" ........thanks for the try though. anyone heard of a eer scope in the works(possibly/hopefully) from redfield?

I have the Burris mounted on a Marlin 1894 44P.  I compared the Burris and the Leupold side by side before purchasing the Burris.  As far as clarity is concerned I feel the Leupold may, just "may", have the Burris beat.  But, for whatever reason I felt that the Burris was quicker and easier for me to be able to shoulder the rifle and get on target.  I felt that factor out weighed the slight difference in clarity.  I usually prefer the Leupold brand so it took me a couple of weeks before I finally broke down and bought the Burris.

thanks for the replies guys.......i think i'll hold out for my original plan which was save up for the leupold scout scope. not to discount the previous poster that said the burris is on the same plane as a leupold, but i will never believe or think that. sorry, but i have a higher sense of quality/warranty/customer service w/the leupold. what i had said previously about the redfield is that since it is made w/the same materials, ran on the same cnc machines in the same facility as the leupy's but just at a more working man's price,it makes it kinda appealing to me.
