Any reason I shouldn't have my .44mag Marlin 1894 hard chromed?  It's a late seventies production rifle that I picked up last year.  I want the rifle to have to most durable finish I can get.  As it is now, it is blued and both the metal and the wood show a good amount of wear.  It hasn't been abused, but has definitely been hunted with.

I understand that it will cost almost as much as the rifle itself and I'll never get my money back out of it, but I don't plan on ever selling it anyway.

I think it's an awesome idea. If you don't want it to be shiny you can have it Melonited.

A couple of the Winchester commemorative 94's have been done in hard chrome I believe.  I saw one on GB that was beautiful.  I am assuming that was the factory finish anyway.  The lever, receiver, and foreend ring were chromed.  Looked really nice against the wood.

Is the Melonite finish as durable?  My goal is a durable finish I don't have to worry about.

I would just let it wear.  Wipe the gun down when you're done shooting to hold off rust and pitting from rust; it'll look way cooler.

Melonite is EVIL tough.  I mean....TOUGH!!!

I am working on a 1973 M94 and I am thinking along the lines of a brushed hardchrome, myself.....haven't decided yet.

You know the finish on a Glock's slide and barrel? Melonite is another name for that.

You could have it parkerized .

But I will tell you what I would try first ( being cheap ) .

Order some of the following from Brownells .

http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=1072/Product/OXPHO_BLUE_reg_

It is the best cold blue I have ever used .  I blued a Winny M 1892 with it .  It still looks old , but better than it did .

And if you do not like it , you can still do something else and have not spent much $$$ .

But I WOULD NOT spend almost the cost of the gun on hard chrome !  If you have to , sell it and get a gun in stainless steel .

God bless
Wyr

I would not hard chrome that gun.  I too would sell it and buy a new stainless one and remove the CB Safety.

If I did anything to the original gun it would be parkerizing.

Purchased this in '94 and had it refinished that same year by  mahovskymetalife.com, his  prices are reasonable
Finish has held up great and I think it looks pretty good

Check it out hereMetalife

I think it's an excellent finish, like I posted I had it done about 15 years ago

You don't hear much about Ron Mahovsky or his company but I believe his work and product to be excellent
My friend saw mine and sent his Trapper to a different company to be Hard Chromed, all I can say is the finish didn't look as good

I must admit, i am a traditionalist at heart,  but that Trapper looks cool as hell.    I think thats an excellent idea if you have a MArlin or safety model Winchester and can part with the bucks !    Big thumbs up !!    (i was on the fence until i saw that cool little Winny)

At the time I only paid $100 plus the shipping to PA and back

I think his price is now around $180 plus shipping
