I am new to lever action rifles but I have had a chance to shoot a cowboy gun and really liked the gun. I have a chance to get one of the following. My question is which one and why.
1. 1895g ported-in stock used
2.1895 sbl not in stock will be after xmas before it would be in.

Thanks
John

The ported gun will be very loud.  Other than that, they're both great guns.  I'd wait for the non-ported one.

I have an 1895G that is factory ported. Compared to my buddies non ported it really isn't that much louder.
Either rifle will serve you well.....I say go for what floats your boat.

If you can stand it, I say wait for the SBL. I has all the things most people add to the 1895.

This, & I would never get a ported model anything. That's just me though. Did get my SBL about a month ago, Hang in there & wait.

I guess I'll be the only one to ask it, but what about an 1895 Cowboy ?

Of the two you list, the 1895 SBL looks pretty slick.

A  1895 cowboy is on my list also. As is a 336. Just looking to start off with a GG and build up from there.

Do you need something the size and recoil of a 45-70?

I've got a Marlin Cowboy in 45-70 and one in 38-55.

I like the 38-55 more!!

Doing a Bear and elk hunt next year. My problem is finding an SBL right now. NO one has them unless I get lucking and someone sells a used one.

That 45-70 does pack a punch with handloads.  My CB with no recoil pad gives me a nice bruise every time I shoot it.  Drops hogs like no bodies business.

I recently bought a ported 1895GS and was worried about the noise with the porting. Turned out to be a non-issue.  THe 45-70 is a low pressure cartridge, maybe that's the reason?

I also have an older 1895, with a 22 inch barrel. I've had it for about 20 years and have taken a lot of deer and other game with it. It's made me a big fan of the 45-70.

Marlin is coming out with a new version of the 1895 in the spring, the 1895GBL.

I would get one w/o porting.
