| I'm now looking at a night stand safe as I have a 2 years old running around and getting into everything. Is GunVault the go to or is there something else better? |

I would stay far away from bio metric
My finger print sensor on my iPhone doesn't work a lot of the time due to skin missing from my thumb. If you never work with your hands and put lotion on them every night you'll be fine. Simplex locks found on amsec Fort Knox and others can be opened quickly and in the dark. |
|
Do some research on the electronic/biometric locks.
I was CERTAIN that's what I wanted. Research showed they can be fickle, may take a few attempts to open, if you don't smudge your fingerprint afterwards it stays on the glass and you can dust it with baby powder to open the box, batteries can die. My reason for wanting it was speed. The Simplex locks are very fast, easy to do in the dark, reliable. I would go Simplex. I have a Ft. Knox and a V-line. Both are well built and I would recommend them. Both should keep kids out. |

Another vote to stay all mechanical for speed, reliability, durability, serviceability along with a heavier constructed box. Buy once and it will last many years. http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-lRUCgW0hh40/VP29kkCnmJI/AAAAAAAAAL4/OrtvNGB-3Nk/s533/FAS1-TL%2Bwith%2BRMR.jpg Since you posted a picture of that neat safe, would you tell us what it is? |

Sure, it is a FAS1 safe. This one is a FAS1-TL (with tactical light holster). |

I'm considering the Sentry Pistol Safe (QAP1BE). Amazon users give it 4.5 stars. That's actually a good example to look at when it comes to electronic safes. The first thing we see on Amazon is the reviews rating and how many reviews, right? 4.5 stars sound and looks good, but is it really? Per Amazon: "Amazon calculates a product’s star ratings using a machine learned model instead of a raw data average. The machine learned model takes into account factors including: the age of a review, helpfulness votes by customers and whether the reviews are from verified purchases." This example shows 1305 total reviews with 1142 positive and 163 critical. That translates to 12% negative and that the safe did not perform as the customer expected. Would you be happy with your gun performing 88% of the time as expected? I don't think so, especially for home defense. https://www.amazon.com/Sentry-Biometric-Access-Pistol-QAP1BE/product-reviews/B00EXQW672/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_viewpnt_rgt?ie=UTF8&reviewerType=all_reviews&showViewpoints=1&sortBy=helpful&filterByStar=critical&pageNumber=1 |

no matter what kind of safe you get, trying to get into it in the middle of the night under extreme stress while groggy after waking up to the sound of a window breaking downstairs isn't going to be fun. When I was young my dad kept a handgun under his bed in one of these small safes. Before he went to sleep, he'd open it and leave the lid open in case he needed it, and in the morning he'd close it. If one of the kids came into the room he was there with the gun. If he wasn't in the room, it was locked. If he needed it in the night it wasn't locked up somewhere. I don't have kids yet so my wife and I just have guns kind of laying around, but when we start having kids, this is exactly what I plan to do. |

I have no problem with the gun out when I'm around it's when I'm traveling and I'd like it accessible to my wife as the big RSC is bolted to the concrete in the garage. |

I'd considered that, but would be afraid that one day I might forget to lock it. Alarm doesn't go off and you are in a rush to get off to work, or you just plain forget. I tested my son a year ago when he was 4 (quadruple checking gun unloaded etc) and he could not pull my Sig DA/SA trigger. That made me feel a little safer just in case (he can pull my Walther PPS striker fired trigger). I still think he would be unable to pull my DA trigger (but certainly NOT recommending that as a sole safety device). Every time I lock my lockboxes I double check to make sure the latch is engaged. |

Quoted: I'm considering the Sentry Pistol Safe (QAP1BE). Amazon users give it 4.5 stars. The product provides 3 choices to open the safe: biometric, keypad, keylock. I plan on using the biometric for regular use, and use the keypad as the backup. The biometric on this is accurate, and very fast. You can also use the buttons if you'd prefer that. Has enough room to fit a full size pistol plus a reload or two. I've never tried but you could probably fit 2 smaller guns in one. Again, it's not perfect, but nothing really is. I have one to keep my kids out |
