I've decided to order my first big boy safe, from a crappy costco winchester RSC that's 15 years old.
I'm working with my dealer to get a summit stainless steel body safe, the Everest 5072. You don't see much about summit safes around here, i've found a few owners on some other board and have spoken to them and they are all very pleased and the sliding pull out rifle racks have no problems with things like scoped ARs. It's 72"x50"x28" and will have 3 "pull out rifle racks" and one traditional row of adjustable shelves and a horse shoe rack. 3/16" stainless body, i'm getting the 5/8" stainless plate door upgrade (from 1/2"). fire rated 1200@90minutes (a little weak there, but supposedly a very honest rating tested by a 3rd party). and 1800+lbs per my dealer http://summitsafes.com/product/summit-everest-7250/ I saw it in person at my local dealer, and got sold on the pull out drawers for long gun organization. I've spoken at length with the owner of Summit who white labels the safes made by reed custom safes. James from summit has been in the safe industry for years and seems like a straight shooter low pressure kind of guy. He seems to be honest and of good character, my slimeball meter never went off once talking to him... Reed Custom Safes however has not been in the industry that long and they make furnaces. The owner wanted to make safes because no one sold a safe the way he wanted it. I'll admit it does make me wonder ever so slightly because he has no security background. But i'm still pretty confidient your average smash and grab criminal isn't going to get into this, especially bolted to the floor in the corner of my basement. Flooding in the basement is my biggest concern, but i'm going to put the safe on a 4" concrete platform to help with that and that's an issue with any safe. Fire is my second biggest concern and while the rating is a little weak, being in the corner in the basement will help a little with 2 sides of the safe against the foundation, should limit heat. I"m also going to build a double sheet rocked gun room to put the safe in. I'll update with installation and pictures in a couple months once it comes in. |
