| What would be the max weight that should be placed on a floor over a crawlspace? The subfloor is I-joists and Advantec plywood. I'm pretty sure they are on 16" centers. |

I had the builders engineer give me the floor loading specs for the area I was looking at putting my 1200# safe. It exceeded the limit so I put jackposts under the area I wanted to place the safe. First dig out holes in the crawlspace directly below where you are placing the safe, 12"x12"x12", then fill with concrete (alternatively, I understand some folks dig out a hole to fit a cinder block and place the safe jackpost on top of that). You can get the jackposts at HD or Lowes. Place a 6x6 across the joists and tighten up the jackpost against it. I put pieces of metal flashing bent downwards between the 6x6 and the top of the jackpost to act as a termite barrier. Editted for clarity |

A little google-fu will yield that the minimum design load for a "typical" structure like that is 40 psf or a 300 lb "point" load, aka single object. The 40 psf is a theoretical limit applied to the entire floor, so items with a greater than 40psf load are okay as long as you have empty areas without load. I wouldn't put anything over 300 lbs on the floor long term unless it was directly over a support footing and/or you have an engineer suggest extra support. |
