I'm looking for some type of self-monitored security system for use in my home.  I have no desire to deal with monitoring companies (even the decent ones like simplisafe), and I do a lot of embedded electronics work so I'm comfortable debugging problems/ hacking things together on my own.

I only have a couple of requirements for the system:
1.  Can use the usual complement of reed switch/ glass break/ PIR sensors.  Wireless is much preferred.
2.  Cell-based alerts, preferably SMS messages.  SMS or smartphone app arming/disarming would also be great.

Does anything like this exist?

Yes.

Get a DSC or Honeywell alarm system. Then get a $90 Envisalink IP communicator. You will have full control from an iPhone, including alerts. If later you decide you want pro monitoring, it is just $10.30 per month average cost. Please note that the cost of the monitoring is generally more than paid for by discounts on homeowner's insurance.

Self-monitoring smoke/fire alarms is not a good idea as you are already unconscious and dying of smoke inhalation or C02 poisoning.

Very cool, thanks!  It looks like they mention which Honeywell/DSC panels are compatible, as well.

DSC and if you can stomach IP notification Eyez-On's free service and one of their plug-n-play modules.
