Any recommondations for some basic/simple IP cameras? I am going to install 2 exterior IP cameras for my mom. Her network is setup on a dual band netgear router wifi and ethernet = Macintosh computer is hard wired to the router and her Ipad/Iphones connect through the wifi. I am looking for a couple fairly easy to set up IP cameras that also have Iphone type alerts and live monitoring.
I'm not sure if I will go with wifi or ethernet cable cameras. Each has their own merits: wifi = no crawling around in the attic and ether net cable = power through the cables and always guaranteed connectivity. I got up in her attic tonight, not impossible but lots of belly crawling in the insulation. Thanks for any help. |

I have a D-Link 932L
Has iphone app. Can view it anywhere either via app or online. Has IR for total darkness. Comes with software for recording to hard drive. You can access the camera itself and change settings via ip address if needed. Has sound. Easy to set up. Only drawback is it washes out in direct sunlight. |

I bought a 930 yesterday and set it in the window after dark. Readjusted it this morning, and by the time I got to work, it was washed out completely. |

I haven't found any actual wireless cameras that I would trust to be weatherproof... even if all the bandwidth, connectivity, and security issues weren't present.
I would go hard-wired PoE... and domes would be preferred to bullets. You can probably expect to pay about $4-500 each for high-quality cameras (or you can go cheap, and simply expect to replace them more often). Also, from the sounds of your locations, you're going to have some lighting challenges... so you might want WDR (Wide Dynamic Range) cameras, otherwise your darks will be too dark, and the sunlight will wash everything else out. Do you have a brand preference? |

TGM, can you list some of the cheaper ones? My area is very well protected so i am not add worried about weather proof. Hard wired poe, ptz, file would probably be best. Also front porch lights are always left on if that matters Check out some of the Acti mini-domes. They will not have WDR, and aren't day/night (the porch lights will be necessary), but they're significantly cheaper than the 5-600 models. You should be able to pick them up for <$300 bucks each... PoE, and megapixel. Acti has discontinued them, so they're much cheaper than their usual stuff. Here is an ebay link |

I also talked with someone at World Eye Cam about cameras. He recommended mostly GeoVision cams like this one which seems to match my needs. http://www.worldeyecam.com/store/_search.php?page=1&q=56310 Anyone try these before? |

I readjusted again today, highest setting for daylight, completely washed out during the day and so dark at night, it can't even see the porch light. All the networking stuff looked really good, fairly easy to set up, but the camera blows. It's not even close in quality to the $15 gearhead camera I bought to hookup to my pi. I have to figure out if I have any type of application for indoors where the light situation doesn't change much. I'm back to configuring the pi. |
